Summary

Welcome to the Bouncing Back from Bankruptcy podcast.

This isn’t a polished success story told from the other side. This is the reality of rebuilding when everything’s fallen apart.

I’m Ellie McKay, and I’m sharing what it really looks like to start again. From having the business, the property portfolio, the outward success… to losing it all and having to rebuild from the ground up.

Most people wait until they’ve figured it out before they speak. This is different.

This is the messy middle.

The part where it’s hard. Where it feels heavy. Where you’re questioning everything, but you keep going anyway.

You’ll hear the highs, the lows, the challenges, and the small wins that feel massive. The real life problems people don’t talk about. Juggling it all, navigating life as a single parent, and the practical realities that come with rebuilding from scratch.

It’s real, it’s raw, it’s unfiltered, and it’s happening in real time.

This is for anyone who’s had it all and lost it. Anyone trying to find their way back when life feels dark and uncertain.

One thing I do know… it’s hard to beat the person who refuses to quit.

If that’s you, you’re in the right place.

  • Bankruptcy Made Me Rethink Success
    May 8 2026

What happens when you lose everything you thought defined your life?

Your marriage. Your business. Your home. Your finances. Your identity.

This episode is an honest conversation about what bankruptcy really looks and feels like behind closed doors. The pressure, the shame, the fear, the judgement, and the emotional impact of watching your entire world unravel all at once.

After a 20 year relationship, building a business, creating a life and then seeing it all come crashing down, I found myself having to rebuild from nothing. Financially, emotionally and mentally.

It also raises some uncomfortable but important questions around how we measure success, where we attach our self worth, and whether the things society tells us matter actually hold any value when life gets turned upside down.

What I’ve realised through all of it is that losing everything gives you a perspective very few people ever experience. When life strips everything back, you stop valuing status and start valuing the basics. Peace. Stability. Food on the table. A roof over your head. The things that actually matter.

There’s so much shame attached to money struggles and failure, especially in a world obsessed with appearances and success. This podcast exists to create honest conversations around those experiences and remind people that bankruptcy is not the end of your story.

  • You Don’t Need a Rich Bank Account to Live a Rich Life
    Apr 15 2026

When you have nothing but you have absolutely everything.

In this episode I’m talking about finding gratitude when you’ve lost everything society told us was success. The titles, the money, the achievements, all gone, and being left to face what’s actually there without any of it.

I’m sharing my own experience of losing it all and how easy it is to attach your self worth and identity to what you do and what you’ve achieved, until it’s taken away.

This is about having to redefine success from the ground up. Stripping it back and realising it isn’t in the things we’ve been taught to chase, it’s in the simple parts of life that are still there when everything else isn’t.

It’s about finding gratitude in that. Finding peace in the basics. Rediscovering who you are without all the noise and understanding that however many times life brings you to your knees, you still have the ability to get back up and build again.

You don’t need a rich bank account to live a rich life.

  • The Messy Middle
    Apr 13 2026

This is the very first episode of Bouncing Back from Bankruptcy, and it feels exactly how this journey is going to look… a little chaotic, slightly unpredictable, and very real.

Today has been one of those days.

I forgot about the school inset day, which means I’m trying to work, record this podcast, and juggle two little humans at the same time. No perfect set up, no ideal conditions, just real life happening in the background.

And in a way, that’s exactly the point.

This podcast isn’t about waiting for the right moment. It’s about starting as you mean to go on, even when things aren’t lined up, even when life feels messy.

In this episode, I’m giving you a bit more insight into what this podcast is going to be, why I’m doing it, and what you can expect as I rebuild from the ground up.

This is the beginning. Not polished. Not perfect. Just honest.

I’m still not entirely sure whether I actually want anyone to hear this, but if you’ve listened and you’ve got some value from it, it wouldn’t do any harm to hit subscribe and share it with someone who might need it.
