    Oct 17 2025
This is Ask An Expert, where every weekday at 9:20am, KCBS is giving you direct access to top experts in various fields. The 6.9 magnitude quake was responsible for 63 deaths and more than 3700 injuries, and it dealt $10 billion worth of damage across the region. It also became a turning point for earthquake preparedness and education and gave rise to urban policies that are still shaping the Bay Area today. To break it all down, KCBS's Steve Scott spoke with Greg Beroza, Professor of Geophysics at Stanford University and co-director of the California Earthquake Center; and Evan Reis, structural engineer and both the Executive Director of the US Resiliency Council and Executive Vice President of Safehub.
