The party met Tariq's family. The local Kahina, an ancient woman named Farah, told Tariq "Great leaders do not seek to lead. They are called to it, and when that call arrives, they answer it"; "A sword can be more than just a sword"; "There is more than one way to win a Mubaraza"; "The masked man knows of what I speak." Roke gave Fjallraven to Farah and it killed her. They met with Milak, who was disturbed to learn of the "murder" of Farah. He challenged Tariq to a mubaraza, with a deadline of "when Ayu is highest in the sky tomorrow." If Tariq does not accept, him and the rest of the party will be banished from Jatoruk "from this day until the end of days."

The party travelled, mostly in the darkness, starved and dehydrated. They ran into Yareem, Tariq's closest brother in age, who was leading his own hunting party. They linked with the hunting party, learned of tensions in Tariq's home Qabul, and travelled for 4 days total before arriving at Jatoruk. Roke heard a voice emanate from his rapier once again.

The party has hiked 2 days into the Western Wall. They have been hearing strange, unnatural sounds in the distance during the nights. They learned that there is an optional detour halfway through the journey that leads to a body of water. There was a scare when Pierre's raven, Symour, mysteriously cawed "danger" several times before disappearing into the mountains. The party crossed a fallen tree and Pierre, Gram, and Junia all almost died.

The party arrived to Cario and learned that Adam Weller, the Steward of the West, is in a delusional denial about the existence of a threat of war. They received a wagon and 10 days worth of food & water, then left west. During they journey Flae met up with them and joined the party. The party has now arrived at the Western Wall.
