Derrick started off a Navy brat (his words), but it took a chance encounter during a volcanic eruption while living in the Philippines (and subsequent evacuation) to plant the seed that would become the motivation for his military (and later private sector) career.

When Matt Mackenzie told his family and friends that he was quitting his teaching job to pursue his passion for basketball player development, they tried to tell him that it wouldn't work, that there wasn't enough calling for it in rural Maine, and that he should just stick with the security afforded to him in the classroom.
