About this listen

Surviving & Thriving in a Body Shaming World

When she suffered a seizure that saw her hospitalised with a cracked skull and facial injuries, Robyn Lawley started to reassess her future. Australia’s leading plus-size model had always called out body-diversity blind spots, but now wondered whether she could continue working in an industry with such a rigid view of beauty.

So Lawley embarked on Every Body, a journey to redefine physical beauty, in which she looks critically at the #BodyPositvity movement and asks: who does it leave on the margin, and what is a better call to action?

Lawley talks to actress Jameela Jamil (The Good Place) about chronic illness, comedian Bridget Everett about the healing power of laughing, actor Ryan O’Connell (Special) about dating with Cerebral Palsy, actress Dascha Polanco (Orange in the New Black) about how race informs her identity and iconic model Paulina Porizkova about ageing in the fashion industry.

Lawley talks to people thriving in bodies with Tourette’s Syndrome, Down syndrome, mastectomy scars, burn scars and those with bodies who were born different, such as Paralympian Kobie Donovan who competes at just 3’10 tall.

Every Body examines the stories we all carry in – and on – our bodies, providing an inspiring roadmap for how to accept our imperfections and even come to celebrate them.

Fascinating and compelling. The stories of survival from a raft of insightful men and women really helps expand on the body acceptance movement and pivots it away from solely focusing on weight. Scars, trauma, mental health, disability, body positivity, toxic shaming etc are explored through personal experiences and stories from both the host and guests. The host gives both space to some heavy topics and brings brevity to it through their own personal experiences and relaxed approach. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole series (especially Turia Pitt and surviving two nights at sea episode) well worth a listen!

So many different perspectives on the same topic, which I hadn't considered. It was thorough, considering the length, and hought provoking.

Love the message

The whole superpowers and high achieving while disabled trope is a bit too inspirational porn style for my liking. This mindset tends to ignore and diminish the difficulties faced by the disabled community, why can harm advocacy for accessibility.
