西村常太郎、十五歳。大塩平八郎の挙兵に連座した父・履三郎の罪により、数え六つの年から九年に及ぶ親類預けの果ての「処罰」だった。
ところが案に相違して、大塩の乱に連座した父の名を、島の人々が敬意を込めて呼ぶのを常太郎は聞いた。
翌年、十六歳になった常太郎は、狗賓が宿るという「御山」の千年杉へ初穂を捧げる役を、島の人々から命じられる。下界から見える大満寺山の先に「御山」はあったが、そこは狗賓に許された者しか踏み入ることができない聖域だった。
