真野朱音は、2年ちょっと前に中学校の同級生だった勝裕と結婚した。勝裕の連れ子、小学五年生になる裕也との3人家族である。
朱音は、子ども会の担当として南郷不二美を訪ねた。近所の尾花公園に面した南郷宅の金網フェンスを覆ったイバラの棘で、子どもが怪我をしており、剪定をお願いするためだった。南郷は50代後半の一人暮らしの女性で、愛犬はドーベルマン。気むずかしいという評判だった。イバラの剪定については、「子どもの怪我なんか知るか。親の責任じゃ。あほっ」と吐き捨てられた。市役所が、公園にロープを張って注意喚起のプレートをかけてくれたが、その夜、寿司屋から特上にぎり８人前が届く。翌日には、ケーブルテレビが契約の確認をしたいと訪ねてきた。どちらも注文したのは自分ではない。やったのは、南郷だ。
同じ頃、裕也がまたいじめに会っていることがわかった。裕也は、「いじめられても平気な強い人間になる」という。
