 【解説】主人公清水新子は9歳。気持ちがむずむず騒ぎ出すと額にある”つむじ”が立ち上がる。題名の「マイマイ」は、その”つむじ”の事。幼馴染のシゲルや転校生の貴伊子、妹の光子、祖父の小次郎、両親、祖母―。”千年”という川(時間)の流れを底流に、「生まれてからの9年と生まれる前の9年しか見当がつかない」新子の心を通して、変わることのない人間の営みやそこに宿る原風景が描かれていく。「時間とは、そんなふうにずっと続いてきて、これからも続いていくのかしら?」「この9年が何十回も何百回も繰り返されることが、どうしてあたりまえなの?」――。
