Barry asks her what a nervous breakdown is, and she says she experiences it as her body not doing what she wanted to do. She says that on the telephone she cannot hear anymore, gets blockages, and cannot translate what people are saying, and that when she swallows she cannot swallow.

A man admits a long struggle with masturbation and sexual fantasy, and asks Barry Long how to stop feeding it. Barry says the real problem is not the girls in short skirts but the ‘psychic tongue’ of imagination that keeps reaching out and exciting the sexual demon in man. The only way to weaken it is ‘prayer and fasting’ Barry say – refusing to look, refusing to indulge fantasy, refusing to feed the habit in any way, even when it erupts in erotic dreams.

Two other men also ask about the same habit. One describes it more as a piercing longing, a deep ache for woman that seems to haunt him. The other asks what is wrong with simply enjoying the habit – “why burn?”, he asks. Barry answers that ‘enjoying it’ is exactly how the demon survives, and that the real work is to endure the burn and starve it of every image and indulgence.

“There’s a demon in us, the demon of sex – it is in all of us, and until we are able to get rid of it… It’s really hard. The only way that gets rid of this demon is to really love… the one way is for man to give himself totally and utterly to the love of a woman.”

Over time, giving up imagination not just sexually but about past and future brings him more into the present. Barry stresses that this is hard work and deeply subtle, but the sign of success is simple: one day he discovers that he is no longer troubled – and nothing of value has been lost in the process.

A man asks Barry how a woman’s past — the energies of her past lovers, her mother and father, and so on — affect him. Barry says that her past is all that has accumulated in her — past lovers, mother, father, the life she has lived – and there is pain and emotion attached. The man’s job is to take that world out of her – the penis, “a loving penis,” is made to take the world out of a woman.

Barry adds that a woman shouldn’t have any world in her; her fundamental state is pure love, and the world has been put into her through hurt and disappointments. Fear can tighten her vagina, and the man must gently approach her with a demonstration of love, without impatience, so she opens to him slowly.

The man adds he was naïve, took more than he could handle, and became more vulnerable to sex. Barry acknowledges this and says the greater the love in a man—through having practised love—the more he can handle, because love dissolves what is taken in. If love is not there sufficiently, there can be transference.

The one cure, Barry says, is love: the more love in a man, the more empty and absent he becomes, and the spiritual life is to become more and more absent.

A woman asks about Barry’s teaching. She says she has been in a relationship for three and a half years, and two things keep coming up: her doubt—“what am I doing here in this relationship?”—and her partner's moodiness. She says she could never fully leave, and she could never fully be there.

Barry says it is a compromise and that eventually in love you have to give up compromise. He says if the man doesn’t change and doesn’t love her enough, she has to leave him. He tells her she doubts because she is not being loved enough, and says any woman will get doubtful if she’s not loved enough. He rejects the idea that she should be there for him, save him, or put up with his emotions and ignorance, and asks why she should waste her young life on someone who makes her unhappy.

Barry engages a man who says that he is afraid and unsure whether he has ever truly loved. Barry distinguishes between having love within oneself and actually loving, and says that real love requires courage, honesty, steadiness, and freedom from fear. Most relationships are distorted because sexuality, excitement, fear, and emotional defences are mistaken for love.

Barry describes a man’s task as remaining firm, tender, and truthful rather than seeking excitement or retreating in fear, and says that genuine loving means approaching a woman without manipulation, without using sex for gratification, and without doubting one’s own love when fear arises. Much conflict between men and women comes from accumulated pain, emotional hurt, and deep confusion about love, which can erupt destructively even when one partner is trying to love sincerely. Relationships can only deepen through honesty, calm inquiry, and mutual willingness to face fear without collapsing into blame, accusation, or emotional warfare.

Even when relationships fail, Barry presents each honest effort as part of a gradual learning process through which people become more truthful, more mature, and more capable of serving what the purpose of love – something deeper and less personal than ordinary romantic attachment.

Barry Long answers a question about a statement he made in a previous talk: “life here is an experiment.” He declares that life on Earth is an experiment originated by extraterrestrial intelligence – the very source of our own intelligence. Our bodies and personalities, he says, function largely as automatons, running on fear, habit and sexual possession. The experiment is simple: can we, these robots, discover and live love in this dense, sense-bound world?

Barry states that humanity is spiritually primitive, devoted to staying unhappy and exporting its misery everywhere. Yet there is hope for the individual. One life lived right is a victory in this cosmic experiment and, he says, matters far more than any scientific breakthrough or imagined contact with distant, supposedly higher forms of life – the only real gift we bring to Earth is love.

If our scientists met other life, they would only transmit their fear and unhappiness. Therefore no genuine contact with other life in the universe is possible at this time, until love rules life on Earth; the universe itself withholds that meeting until we fulfil the mission of bringing love to this planet – until love flowers here, no real contact with other life is possible.

Barry pre-sages and anticipates a future in which humanity flees natural existence and life in the body, moving instead into a mental, virtual existence. Rather than living on the earth in real relationship, we will increasingly inhabit virtual worlds, pressing buttons in the brain for whatever experience we want – such as an orgasm. As this takes over, it will replace the need for love, and both the world and the individual will find themselves in an ever more loveless existence.

"The only free will that we have is when we have no will, and then there is only the Divine Will, which is every moment. Then I have no will on my own, then I am free."

A woman asks Barry Long how much free will does she really have and how she can 'choose' to let go of anger if, as he says, there is no free will. Barry replies that the only real freedom is when there is no personal will at all, only Divine Will operating in every moment.

What we normally call 'choice' is simply the self reacting from past experience, likes and dislikes. Holding anger, Barry says, is like walking on broken glass: once you truly recognise that it hurts, you don’t 'decide' not to step on it – you simply don’t. In the same way, once anger is seen as pain in the body, it naturally drops away without a big inner drama of decision.

Real spiritual life moves towards giving up unnecessary choices and decisions, and living in trust that the Divine Will is already running everything – including the moment when anger ends.

A woman tells Barry that since first meeting him her life has changed, but she needs clarification. Without consciously seeking it, she says, communication with dead people, higher beings, other intelligences and extraterrestrial intelligence has come into her awareness and guided her towards what she calls God realisation. She says this began about ten years earlier when dead people started speaking through her, giving proofs of their survival to people she had never met.

Barry replies that such psychic ability is relatively common and not wrong, yet belongs to a psychic band of voices, guidance, so-called higher beings and channelers which is not spiritual and not the truth. He warns against getting fixated on disembodied beings, whom he calls irresponsible, and says he can only rightly communicate truth while responsible for this body. On extraterrestrial intelligence he speaks of Earth as a cosmic being within a greater system of beings, all finally one being, God.
