About this listen

'Here's my idea of romance: You will soon be dead. Life will sometimes seem long and tough and, God, it's tiring. And you will sometimes be happy and sometimes sad. And then you'll be old. And then you'll be dead. There is only one sensible thing to do with this empty existence, and that is: fill it.'

Tim Minchin has a reputation for writing a good speech, and has been asked to do so on several occasions. Drawn from three of Tim's most beloved university commencement addresses, You Don't Have to Have a Dream offers his inimitable thoughts and advice on life, art, success, kindness, love, and thriving in a meaningless universe.

Featuring specially commissioned illustrations throughout, You Don't Have to Have a Dream is a rallying cry for creativity and compassion in our daily lives, and how it's never too late to put something beautiful out into the world.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book and intend to listen to to again. A good book to encourage the youth of today to think outside the square.

This is a must read/listen

A little gem of a book filled with anecdotes and musings from someone who doesn’t claim to know everything- but with some great life lessons. I have given copies to each of my young adult daughters because it is something I would have loved to hear or read at their age …

Whimsical and at times profound

This was a nice quick listen and a good balance to some of the books and podcasts that I’ve been listening to. Tim Minchin’s advice can be summarised as: be kind, think critically, work hard to be the best version of you.

Be kind.

This is fab and very very very dense. So much to absorb. Requires multiple listens.

Fab

This is an easy listen and has lots we can learn from. Love Tim Minchin's view on life. I can feel his inspiration. Make the time to have a listen you will learn.

"Be kind"

Tim has such a wonderful way with words. The world would be a much kinder & more rational place, if there were more people who thought like this. Critical thinking and compassion for all others are key. And finding ways (like this book), to communicate our (well considered, not reflexive) thoughts, in a more healthy way, rather than arguing with people on social media... Wise words, Tim! Good advice for everybody.

Great advice here for everyone, not just people graduating from university. A MUST read!!

I have listened to Tim's speeches many times. He manages to capture the thoughts that lie wrapped in blankets in my own head. Although this book is short it contains much wisdom. Pass it onto your young folks as they start their lives. Give it to your old folk who have done it all. Or just listen to Tim's voice on you way to work to brighten your day. Buy it. Read it.

Advice for now.

I loved everything about this. no drama, truth. I love the way tim minchin speaks to you not at you and the tones in his language. just love it

every word in this short book has value, or adds to the rambling charm of the performance. Can't rate it highly enough.

short and sweet
