Publisher's Summary

Number-One Multi-Million-Copy Best Seller • A one-of-a-kind portrait of a true American hero: General Chuck Yeager

“The secret of my success is that I always managed to live to fly another day.”

General Chuck Yeager was the greatest test pilot of them all - the first man to fly faster than the speed of sound...the World War II flying ace who shot down a Messerschmitt jet with a prop-driven P-51 Mustang...the hero who defined a certain quality that all hotshot fly-boys of the postwar era aimed to achieve: the right stuff.

Now he tells his whole incredible life story with the same “wide-open, full throttle” approach that has marked his astonishing career. What it was really like engaging in do-or-die dogfights over Nazi Europe. How after being shot down over occupied France, Yeager somehow managed to escape. The amazing behind-the-scenes story of smashing the sound barrier despite cracked ribs from a riding accident days before.

The entire story is here, in Yeager’s own words, and in wonderful insights from his wife and those friends and colleagues who have known him best. It is the personal and public story of a man who settled for nothing less than excellence.

Just an Amazing Life

Many people are familiar with a part of Chuck Yeager's life from the movie "The Right Stuff." Let's say that, while very entertaining, the movie does not get everything right. The real story is even more interesting.

Chuck's adventures in through World War II would alone also make an almost unbelievable movie. Chuck was a double ace and once shot down five planes in one day. On top of that he bailed out and had a harrowing escape through the underground. Amazing.

When Chuck broke the sound barrier after the war, he was only, by my count 24 or 25. He then did more test flying, and then led squadrons in Germany and elsewhere. All along the way, he met the icons of the age and had many colorful friends and admirers, including Pancho Barnes and Jackie Cochran. There is just one amazing story after another.

The book ends in the 1980s. As this review is written, Chuck is still with us at 97. A true American hero.

This is a great book. The narration is mainly in the first person by "Chuck" with excerpts from his wife Glynnis and others (not the real people--professional narrators playing their parts). It is well done.

excellent!!!!!!!!

I really enjoyed this book. If you are an aviation buff you will love it. If you are not an enthusiast you will still find it riveting. It is a great story about what can be achieved, both technically and personally. I will read it again.

I don’t exaggerate reviews over 30 military books this is a top

Unreal history and feats. Awesome performances one of the best quality audibles I’ve ever heard besides the epic story. This book could’ve been a 10part series so having one hi quality recording is very rich. 10/10 the only book I’ve ever given this rating I believe.

Wonderful story of an amazing man

I really enjoyed the in-depth history of General Yeager’s life. I recommend anyone wanting to learn about early aviation history to listen to this book. I was very sad at the end of the book as I realized that the United States has lost a national treasure with his recent passing.

Yeager! No other headline needed!

What a tremendous story! The only thing I would have loved to learn was his deep struggles, alcohol and other deeper issues to get the whole picture. How come no one has done a mini series on this guy? I could see at least 4 or 5 seasons on Amazon Prime. :)

A reminder of what a great man is all about

I bought this book the day I heard of the passing of Chuck Yeager. I had read another book on Chuck some years ago but this is really the best. It’s like an action novel.
What a great book about a true hero. One of the greatest airmen of all time. It’s well read and the narratives by the different characters made it really enjoyable.

Autobiographical thriller.

I read this autobiography in the late 90’s. I was very impressed and thoroughly enjoyed it. Upon hearing of Yeager’s death I wanted to refresh the memory of what I had read. I enjoyed it as much this time as I did 20+ years ago. Incredible life.
