Only read this in 2025 , this story was written 178 years ago! The depth of the characters, the tragedy, obsession, control just astounds me that it still hits today and for the writers first book!

So much to unpack! Would love to read /discuss this as a book club read as I do not call this a ‘love story’ / romance book but a psychological gothic drama. It’s so dark and heart wrenching.

I honestly loved this story. So many layers to unpack.

Often cited as the greatest ever work of English literature (a view I share) this haunting character study could not have been better told by Janet McTeer. A truly mesmerising performance. Brought up in York and a star in a film version she was made for this role. Absolutely fantastic
