 Woyzeck, ein Laufbursche, wird von seinem Vorgesetzten, einem Hauptmann, beschimpft und gedemütigt. Sein dürftiges Gehalt reicht kaum zum Leben und zur Ernährung seiner Freundin und seines unehelichen Kindes. Deshalb beschließt er sich auf das Angebot eines Arztes als "Versuchskaninchen" für ein medizinisches Experiment einzulassen. Dieses besteht darin sich einseitig, nur mit Erbsen, zu ernähren. Schließlich betrügt ihn auch noch seine Freundin. Er hält dem körperlichen und psychischen Druck nicht stand und ermordet seine Freundin mit einem Messer.
