Publisher's Summary

Nothing quite prepared telepath Larry Greenberg for mind-to-mind contact with an alien. In the interest of science, Larry tapped the mind of Kzanol - and that was his first mistake.

Kzanol was a thrint from a distant galaxy. He had been trapped on Earth in a time-stasis field for two billion years. Now he was on the loose, and Larry knew everything he was thinking. Thrints lived to plunder and enslave lesser planets - and the planet Kzanol had in mind was Earth!

How annoying!

This cuts off in the middle of a sentence! Just ends! Clearly not the end of the book, just incomplete!

good book

love the series. good reading - although he has a low deep voice for some characters - and all of the narration. if you are traveling in a car with road noise it blends in completely. so don't listen while driving and all is wonderful.

Kzanol Lives!

Welcome to Larry Niven's rollercoaster ride of a story from the bottom of the ocean to the edge of the solar system. In his first novel (1966) he writes an action packed space opera that, starting in chapter 4, takes off and doesn't let up. It begins as an archaeological/scientific mystery and quickly turns into an interplanetary chase/detective story. Audible/Blackstone Audio do a great job presenting the story as it's very complicated following events after the mysterious Sea Statue is placed in Dr. Jansky's time retarding field. I remember having to reread those sections of the book when I read this story for the first time but was able to follow it in your audiobook. The narrator, Bradford Hastings, does a great job playing Lucas Garner, Dr. Jansky, the Belters and all the characters with one exception - an ill-advised falsetto used a couple times portraying Judy Greenberg. My only other criticism is with Larry Niven's early writing style. In my opinion Niven's best early stories are his short stories. His novels, like this one, have long discussions of things completely unrelated to the story that hurt the pacing and distract the reader/listener. I still very much enjoyed listening to your audiobook and hope you soon publish the other books listed in your Known Space series. Flatlander and Crashlander will contain many of my favorite short stories containing the characters Lucas Garner, introduced in this book, and Beowulf Shaeffer introduced in the award winning short story collection Neutron Star (1968).

Words of a master

After reading contemporary science fiction recently it was quite refreshing to return to this master. It’s not so much the language that makes the impression but the ideas and the imagination that leave you in awe.

High speed chase to Neptune

there's something about the Known Space novels that create this thrilling new world and rereading them long after they've been written is still rewarding. It may not be Ringworld but one can completely invest in the story and pull out of it a few hours later surprised at where the time has gone.

loved it

Loved it! Larry Niven's work is excellent. The characters are well thought out & relatable giving them almost addictive readability, and the performance was excellently done.

A decent listen

the narrator made the best out of a difficult book to listen to (vs reading)
