The artifact is a vast circular ribbon of matter, some 180 million miles across, with a sun at its center. Great plot but in 2024 the tone towards women is very dated and demeaning also in hindsight some references to technology such as tape recordings, are a bit unimaginative considering the story is set in the distant future.

I read the book many years ago and loved it, I was happy when I found it as a audio book and could revisit a world I got lost in all those years ago.

Many aspects of the story are a sign of the time in which it was written, so some readers may take pause especially concerning the attitudes towards gender. That said, there is no explicit abuse - mostly only old thinking and ways of storytelling. At the least, this feminist was able to squint past the fog and enjoy the story. With that out of the way, it must be said that nobody builds a world quite like Niven. If you are looking for a true, gripping adventure with rounded characters and the delights of space travel, I cannot recommend Ringworld highly enough.
