Publisher's Summary

In the zombie apocalypse, your worst enemy may be yourself.

Rose Winter has enough problems. With a marriage going down the tubes and a dreaded anniversary party on the horizon, the last thing she needs is the zombie apocalypse. She wanted to get drunk and sing karaoke, not murder her undead neighbors. It’s clear the party’s over, however, now Rose has more problems - a missing husband, an overbearing houseguest, and keeping her family alive.

Tom Jensen has inflexible rules. Rule number one? Don’t deviate from the plan. But when his life is overturned in the space of minutes, his plans die along with everything else. The world is finished, the future is uncertain, and survival means living in the last place he’d planned to be. Maybe his rules weren’t meant to be broken, but if he can’t change his tune, he risks losing the one thing he has left - his daughter.

Craig Matthews has a mission: get to Oregon. Doable, maybe, if he could bring himself to leave his apartment. With his food and water near gone and death closer than ever, a chance encounter may lead to finding his friends - if he can first find his courage.

Unfortunately, the new world doesn’t always mean leaving old problems behind, and as the West Coast succumbs to the virus, the survivors face more than the undead - they face themselves. But in an existence where fences offer dubious safety and zombies certain danger, people may save you in more ways than one.

Immersive experience!

This book was a lucky find. I'm so glad that I did commit to finishing it.
The characters are so well crafted that they feel like people you know.
The story was fast paced, the action engaging, and humour is sprinkled generously throughout.
I went through a whole range of emotions as I listened, I was cheering, grieving, dashing, shouting, and laughing from start to finish.
Finally, a zompoc book that has characters I can identify with.
Highly recommended.

meh, nothing earth shattering.

Not a huge fan of the narration, the voices are very hard to take seriously and lack conviction and emotion. The characters are very trite. The whole thing is a bit slow frankly. I haven't decided if I will get the sequel. I suppose it depends if I can even remember this first book when the sequel is released. I have listened to many books I can't remember now that were far better than this. Having said that it also isn't the worst I have bought either and it held my attention well enough to get through it.

Character voice consistency

Excellent book and reading but it would be great to have the narraters read each chapter together so that the voices of each character are consistent through out the book (like in the City Series).

All in all pretty solid novel. A bit slow in some parts but just push through ... the slow parts are important though.

Probably the Best Written Zombie Book Out There

May not make action junkies happy, this book has a humanity that I now want to see in all zompoc books.

Not exactly cerebral, but such solid characters (though the 19 and 22 year old kids behave like they're 12 most of the time)

Prepare to binge

Absolutely brilliantly written and performed, a tale from the apocalypse that details ordinary people’s lives as they are rapidly overtaken by events. Realistic, entertaining with well developed characters you come to love, it’s not filled with endless descriptions of weapons, military men and women, but has enough gore to keep the genre pure. Guttered the second part hasn’t been written yet. If you loved ‘all the stars’ novels, you will love this. One of the best audios I’ve been entertained by since March 2019.

Slow starting but intriguing

A bit of a slow starter and took me a while to get through it but I enjoyed the middle to end thoroughly. It is Part of a series, which I didn't know but I'm looking forward to the next part/s

There were times where I got lost but that might have just been my own fault. I didn't find my heart racing very often but I was surprised in some places.

It was okay.

I have read all of Fleming's books set in this world. I've enjoyed the previous two series. That being said, this book was . . . just okay.

First, what bothered me throughout the book was the seeming need to overexplain things dealing with gender identity, etc. She did an information dump in one section. As we marched on through the characters, I felt like the author had a checklist to cover every single known group, and I began checking it off in my head when I realized what was happening. It seemed like there was secondary agenda to represent a bunch of underrepresented groups. This a noble endeavor that can be pulled off - when all of the characters aren't dumped into one novel in what feels like a "let's put everyone into these pages and be sure to put in into the story somehow" plan. In this day and age, I don't think many people care one way or another about character gender/orientation, but I found that the way author placed the characters and brought up these topics pulled focus from the novel because it was so obvious. It was ridiculous, and would be laughable if I didn't know she was serious.

Second, the characters were unrelatable to the point of being unrealistic. The constant whining of a few of them made me wish for their demise. Most adults know what negative self-speak is; however, it was poured on too thick. I also found some of the characters to be shells and clichés, rather than actual characters developed for supporting roles.

Third, the main character is . . . bland - not quite the right word, but I can't put my finger on it. She is also annoying in an unlikable way. I don't think she is very well-written and, despite her situation, I didn't feel very sympathetic. She was also a character on the author's checklist.

Fourth, the book was very, very predictable. I don't know if it's because I am familiar with the author's writing or not, but the plot and path were apparent very early on in the story.

Finally, the narrators. Part of the character issues may be the way they were read. Still, whether you like/dislike a narrator, or a book, is subjective.

Overall, I found this book disappointing (especially when measured next to the first books of the other series) because I expect more from this author. As a standalone, it is also just okay. I will still buy the other books because I think (hope) they'll get better.

I knew when I started this that was I going to be sad when it was over and I have to wait for the next book but I love the world this author has created and there was no way I could wait. This series feels very different for me from the other two. I was very surprised with how little excitement & death this book had and that makes me think the next book is going to be a blood bath lol. I liked getting to know the characters and definitely had a few that it took me while to like but I came around for most of them (there are a few I won't be sad when they are gone LOL). I liked that no one in this series is perfect, no one is a hero from the beginning and they all had/have a lot of growing to do to survive this new world. Now I will whine for a year until this next book comes out ;)

The narration was good, no one stood out more than the others for me, they all came together well.

Didn't like this one

The book started off good but then turned into a drama about marriage. Then the Craig chapters started. The most boring narrator and character I have encountered. If you are interested in zombie light with a heavy dose of boredom you will love this book. Me? Not so much.

Author forgot to include an ending

I get that it’s the first book in a series but when did it become ok to just stop the story on a random chapter?!? The story itself is good but after listening for 15+ hours, you would think the author would give readers something to make the time worthwhile. This was a TERRIBLE way to “end” a book. Not sure I’d bother with book 2 — the action scene probably won’t come for a few more $$’s — err, I mean books. Might as well hold off and just buy the final book in the series to actually get a beginning, middle AND end in one book.

Might be my favorite book in all the series

This may just be my favorite book in all her series. I was worried that it would be too much like the others and bore me but it was great. I stayed up way too late listening and finished the whole thing in 2 days. Now I want the next one. It reminds me of the first season of the walking dead and not just because of the zombies. I don’t mean the plot line is the same though. It is just the feeling of family. The people you loved before the apocalypse and the new people who become family.

Sarah does a great job making her characters real. None are perfect most have a weird quirk or two. She allows us to laugh one minute and the next chapter worry about our favorite character. I would recommend this book to zombie lovers or someone who likes a good story about how loving complicated and hurtful family can be.

All 4 of the narrators were great and I would love listening to them again. I am going to try and figure out which one was Rose’s because she may be my favorite (also one of my favorite characters so that may make me bias). Having the different narrators also helped with keeping people straight.

If you liked this one and have not read the other two series set in this world I highly recommended you pick them up while waiting for the next one of these.

5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I wondered when I saw this book was available, was it going to be as good as the first two series, how much can you write about zombies and not be repetitious. Well it was different, can’t say better, but new perspective, new characters, if I’m not mistaken where it all began. This the first book in the series was rather mild not a lot of action, more getting to know characters, a rather harrowing journey but no major battles, but I’m sure they are in store, have to wait looking forward for next in the series.
Awesome narration by Roger, Teri, Christian & Mia.

fight to survive

I cannot say enough about how much I loved this book. I read it first then listened as soon as audible came out. Great characters and the narration was perfect. Some very edge of your seat action and excitement here. I completely identified with Rose and cannot wait to hear the next book. Sarah Lyons Fleming rocks, such a great writer.

THIS IS MY FAVORITE ONE!

I've read all 3 of these series. Each of them stuck with me and I couldn't get enough. This author has a way with character development that cause a love to form for them. This latest book blows them away, once again so impressed! These books are added to my favorite series. Along with the Outlander series, Discovery of witches and now all of these. ♡

Okay listen

This book was okay, I love zombie books, it's my fave genre. Good characters are so important and this book has them. But there is way too much lovey dovey stuff. Whole chapters of characters pining after each other. Also it felt a little bit like the author set out a beginning, middle and ending on paper and then didnt let creativeness take over at all, it's very predictable. I wont be getting the next book in the series because although I love the characters I know exactly what will happen in it!

overall worth a listen

The story itself is typical zombie. But the stories around the characters is more interesting you do have the killing zombies moments but unlike others I've listened to it's not all graphic violence over and over. The performance is good so over all good story.

Brilliant, captivating story

I loved this book and cant wait for the next installment. I have listened to so many post apocalyptic/zombie/emp books that I was started to getting bored with the genre but this story is different, with more emphasis on family & friendship though not in a soppy way. The characters are all different and by the end of the book you feel you know them all and who you are rooting for. The narration is excellent and as their is more than one it mixes and breaks up the story well. Also excellent value for money due to the length of the audio

More about relationships than zombies but I really enjoyed listening to this story. I urge you to try it.

This was a really enjoyable listen and not the usual blood and guts take. It focuses on the human relationships during the apocalypse rather than zombies tearing guts out and the characters are well written and plausible, well worth a listen and I am looking forward to the next book to find out what happens to the characters.

The best Apocolypse Writer!

Sarah Lyons Fleming has a knack of making you love the characters she creates, all of her books - rather than focusing on gore - tell the story of friendship and love, borne out of unimaginable disaster.

I love the fact that she has multiple readers, both male and female, it feels like I am listening to a movie, not a book. I want to see all of these books written into film though, it would be the perfect reward for Sarahs skills.

I can't wait for the next book in the series.. and the next, and the next... this one is her best yet and I dont want it to end.
