If you want to listen to a novel that perpetuates the notion that visual artists are barely hanging onto sanity then this is it. You might otherwise be into ‘manic pixie girl’ tropes and thusly enjoy this portrait of a suffering chef husband dealing with the banal day-to-day of domestic maintenance, while the female protagonist spins off in various narcissistic crisis of artistic ego but (spoiler) who ultimately fucks him wearing a pigs head and trotters eccentrically obtained from the hapless local butcher. Note: that scene sounds more interesting than it was.

Honestly, I understand the take that artists can be insufferable leading into a show or whatever. I’ve been there and witnessed it. I’m also unsure if I’m out of touch with the younger generation of artists and perhaps this is now ‘normal’ (please no). Between the self absorbed musings involving imaginary mentors, and the asinine bulletins of commentary coming from the protagonist’s online “fan base” this book is manic word salad that I endured with irritation because I downloaded it following a recommendation from Michael Williams’ Read This podcast.

Does author despise artists?

The book was well narrated and that is the only positive think I can say about it. The main character of Sabine is a self centred, egotistical and unhinged artist. I had to keep stopping to read positive reviews and wonder if we were reading the same book.

The worst, silliest, most puerile book that I have ever had the displeasure of listening to. I am returning this one. Some might like it, but it is not for me.
