Der hässliche, schwächliche 17-jährige Gymnasiast Wolodja lebt mit seiner Mutter in der Stadt. Er besucht oft zusammen mit seiner Mutter Marja die entfernte Verwandte Lilli auf dem Land. Eines Tages verliebt er sich dort in die kräftige, gesunde, aber verheiratete, ca. 30-jährige Anna, einer Cousine von Lilli. Wolodja macht ihr zwei Liebeserklärungen. Während sie sich bei der ersten Liebeserklärung neutral verhält, weist sie den "Kleinen" bei der zweiten in seine Schranken. Wolodja ist traurig und begeht bei der Rückkehr in die Stadt Selbstmord.
Diese Erzählung des russischen Schriftstellers Anton Tschechow (1860-1904) erschien 1887 und beruht auf einem Briefwechsel mit dem ebenfalls russischen Schriftsteller Dmitri Grigorowitsch (1822-1899).
Hans Paetsch (1909-2002) war Schauspieler, Regisseur, Hörspiel- und Synchronsprecher. Er galt als "Märchenonkel der Nation", da er beliebten Hörspielen, wie "Hui-Buh" und "Der kleine Muck" als Erzähler seine Stimme verlieh.
