Publisher's Summary

Determined to fulfill her late husband's dream, Rachel Boyd struggles to keep her ranch afloat with the help of her two young sons. But some days it feels as though her every effort is sabotaged. When faced with a loss she cannot afford, she's forced to trust Rand Brookston, the one man in Timber Ridge she wishes to avoid. And with good reason. He's a physician, just like her father, which tells her everything she needs to know about him. Or so she thinks.... Dr. Rand Brookston ventured west with the dream of bringing modern medicine to the wilds of the Colorado Rockies, but the townspeople have been slow to trust him. Just as slow in coming is Rand's dream to build the town a proper clinic. When a patient's life is threatened, Rand makes a choice - one that sends ripples through the town of Timber Ridge. And through Rachel Boyd's stubborn heart.

Wow! Brava, Tamera!

I listened to this as an Audible.com download. I have a Platinum membership. Wow, what a book! The narrator was perfect for this book. She really could not have done the heroine any more justice and she did great with the hero, the heroine’s sons, and the minor characters. No easy feat!
The prologue sets up a spooky mystery that leaves a question hanging in the air – who is the dead man? It is not until you are about a third to halfway through the book when the prologue begins to make sense. I have never read a Tamara Alexander book before. Something she does that I don’t see as often as I would like, is weaving other subplot threads through her story. This is something I do, too, in my own writing but I see far too many books with a simple straight forward plot and little additional subplots or threads and themes. She tied them up beautifully at the end, too, which I always appreciate.
The heroine is a widower with two sons and is having a tough go of things. Her father was a physician and she served as a medical practitioner until the new physician came to town. It is cute how it is clear right from the beginning that the doctor has fallen for the pretty widow but she still hasn’t recovered from the loss of her husband, who died several years earlier.
Great listen, I will probably listen to this again now that I realize what the prologue was all about. I highly recommend this Tamara Alexander book to anyone who enjoys Christian historical romance. Brava, Tamera, both for the story and for the craft in writing!

Excellent story!

Loved this post Civil War story into the New West! Rand and Rachel had an interesting story to tell separately. Many side characters had great stories. Wish there was a continuation book of their lives and how Rachel’s sons grow up to meet young women to marry. A Colorado Listener

Wonderful

This journey was of healing and faith to find love and to deal with loss. Profound is a perfect word to describe it. Tamara’s words at the end about her mom’s illness was so heart warming, reminding me of how faithful God is to us. Simply wonderful story.

Warm and tender.

Too spiritual for me but, nevertheless a heartwarming listen with good story and character development and insightful glimpses into pioneer life.

Best one from the author

I've listened to most of Tamera Alexander books, going so far back - was a pleasant surprise to find such a tender, soul searching account of grief and loss. The characters are wonderfully developed - even the smallest, "non-significant" role-players. This is a beautiful account of how the community can be transformed if just one person does not live "minding their own business". Facing our own fears, forgiveness, living according to the true calling are beautifully and "humanely" approached in the story. The Christian element was strong and present, without becoming a sermon. The Narrator!! I wish more of Tamera Alexander's books were re-narrated by this voice talent.

Heartfelt Writing of Real-Life Emotions

Excellent writing, great plot and more than a prairie romance. Within My Heart brings western expansion to life in characters of faith, courage and honor. The character flaw in Rand is unusual and extremely interesting. It brought the story together in a most interesting way. I also appreciate the way Tamera Alexander handles physical desire. Just as she does other emotions, the author writes of real-life.

Best of the series

This is a great conclusion to the three part series. I loved the characters and their struggles.
