About this listen

Covens. Girl bands. Ballet troupes. Convents. In all times and places, girls and women have come together in communities of vocation, of necessity, of support. And wherever women gather, magic happens. Female farmers change the way we grow our food. Online beauty communities democratise the intricacies of skincare. Teen girls invent phrases that enter the urban lexicon, and choose our next pop superstars.

Patriarchal societies have long been content to uphold men’s and boys’ clubs, while viewing groups that exclude men as sites of rivalry and suspicion. In this deeply personal exploration of what women make together, Sam George-Allen delves into workplaces, industries and social groups to dismantle the cultural myth of female isolation and uncover evidence that these groups are formidable.

Thoughtful, intimate, and convincing, Witches is a long-overdue celebration of the power and pleasure of working with other women.©2019 Sam George-Allen (P)2019 Penguin Random House Australia

I absolutely adored this book. it talked to so many parts of myself. I cried far more than I should have and enjoyed hearing about all the different ways women are coming together to create the magic that only exists when we do.

An essential read for every woman!

Empowering, interesting, challenging, and at times a highly controversial (in my household) exploration of the lived truth of many women. Highly recommended.

Listening to this audiobook, there's something beautiful and haunting about both the topics covered and the author's voice that routinely brought tears to my eyes as I walked and listened. The deep sadness regarding the way women have been and still are treated, alongside the incredible hope, inspiration and joy we continue to create together brought up a lot of emotions I didn't expect. I don't love most audiobooks, but I loved this. Thank you, Sam, for your beautiful writing and voice.

My partner and I listened to this book over 10 weeks as we traveled around Australia. Each chapter often ignited lengthy conversations triggered by the themes, research, analysis and perspectives beautifully woven together by Sam. I was particularly fascinated with the chapters on female farmers, sex workers, ballet dancers, nuns, trans women and beauty communities. As a bonus, Sam George-Allen's reading of the book was beautiful to listen to.

Coherently woven and magical tapestry of stories

The summary drew me in and I gave the book its time, the narrator was gentle and delivered the content beautifully, but I found myself going in and out of concentration. It was an interesting report on the subject but I was left wanting more depth and more insite from each chapter. Surely the research is there, let us in, educate us more.

I just wanted more depth
