About this listen

"Narrator Gabra Zackman engages with this weird, grim novel, a combination of fantasy and mystery...her superb pacing and intense emotions add to the story's strange and intriguing atmosphere." (AudioFile Magazine)

After attacking Devil's Reef in 1928, the US government rounded up the people of Innsmouth and took them to the desert, far from their ocean, their Deep One ancestors, and their sleeping god, Cthulhu. Only Aphra and Caleb Marsh survived the camps, and they emerged without a past or a future.

The government that stole Aphra's life now needs her help. FBI agent Ron Spector believes that communist spies have stolen dangerous magical secrets from Miskatonic University, secrets that could turn the Cold War hot in an instant and hasten the end of the human race. Aphra must return to the ruins of her home, gather scraps of her stolen history, and assemble a new family to face the darkness of human nature.

I'm not much of a writer, or even reader, but I'm going to do my best to articulate why this book should be shared with everybody. It's the best Cthulhu Mythos inspired story that I've ever heard. The writing is really beautiful. Each character made me feel a lot of emotion whether that was tenderness or dislike or amusement. No character seemed unnecessary. I listened to the acknowledgements, and I'm glad I did because I learnt that this amazing story isn't the work of just one person. It came from lots of people and they've all made something beautiful. From My knowledge of Lovecraft, Aphra navigate a universe faithful to his original. But the fact that the story is about acceptance and love makes the story shine in comparison to his body of work. I really appreciated Gabra Zackman's narration. Her character voices are all unique and it was easy to tell who was speaking. Thank you Ruthanna Emrys for sharing this with us. It was spectacular.
