Publisher's Summary

Alan Bennett reads A. A. Milne's much-loved stories about a small bear and his friends. The collection includes Winnie-the-Pooh, The House at Pooh Corner and A Party for Pooh.

What is the connection between a bear of very little brain and a honey pot? Usually it's the very sticky paw of Winnie-the-Pooh, as he takes a break between adventures for a little something. In these stories, Pooh goes visiting and gets into a tight place, Eeyore loses a tail, Piglet meets a Heffalump, Eeyore has a birthday and gets two presents, and an expedition is mounted to the North Pole! As usual they are accompanied by Kanga, Roo, Rabbit and Owl - to say nothing of Pooh's very clever young human friend, Christopher Robin. Now with a musical introduction, Alan Bennett gives A. A. Milne's characters the voices you felt they were always meant to have in this collection of stories about Winnie-the-Pooh, Piglet, Tigger, Eeyore and Owl.

The stories are:

  • 'Winnie-the-Pooh Goes Visiting and Gets into a Tight Place'
  • 'Pooh and Piglet Nearly Catch a Woozle and Eeyore Loses a Tail'
  • 'Piglet Meets a Heffalump'
  • 'Eeyore Has a Birthday and Gets Two Presents'
  • 'Christopher Robin Leads an Expedition to the North Pole'
  • 'A House Is Built at Pooh Corner for Eeyore'
  • 'Tigger Comes to the Forest and Has Breakfast'
  • 'A Search Is Organised and Piglet Nearly Meets the Heffalump Again'
  • 'Pooh Invents a New Game and Eeyore Joins In'
  • 'Piglet Does a Very Grand Thing and Owl Moves House'
  • 'Kanga and Baby Roo Come to the Forest'
  • 'Piglet Is Entirely Surrounded by Water'
  • 'Christoper Robin Gives Pooh a Party'
  • 'Tiggers Don't Climb Trees'
  • 'Rabbit Has a Busy Day'
  • 'Tigger Is Unbounced'

It is abridged poorly.

Perhaps I should have caught that it was abridged before I got it. I don't really blame them for trying but they didn't do a very good job. They sometimes leave in bits that would make no since if I hadn't already read the original stories. The original stories are better especially for adults that might have to listen to these many times.

Shame about the abridgement

Be aware you don't get the full leisurely stories. Alan Bennett is of course a lovely narrator. But with an audiobook that's already 4 hours, why not just read the whole thing instead of snipping? In particular, many of Pooh's hums and songs have been cut -- a great shame since where they are included Bennett does them so well. My son who's a great Pooh reader notices every little omission; to me the stories feel kind of brisk.

What a pity it is so drastically abridged

Alan Bennett is my favourite voice for all the Pooh characters. But how sad that the stories are so extremely abridged, and are even, for some reason, not in the right chronological order. The story about Kanga and Roo arriving in the forest comes after stories with Kanga and Roo in them. I guess there's not much chance these will ever be done with Bennett reading the unabridged stories, but it would be lovely if that was to happen.

Alan Bennett rendition very funny

I love this narration by Alan Bennett. Very funny. Great squeaky Piglet voice, great Pooh Bear voice. And Eeyore depressed voice very funny. I like Kanga and Roo’s Australian voices. So clever. Great Rabbit and Tiger voices too. Piglet voice is my favourite. A.A. Milne’s tales of the animals in the forest, and Christopher Robin is funny, imaginative and also keenly observed in the ways of animals and children and adults, and people generally. It was very cheering, with bite size chapters. Helped my mental health, thank you.

like listening to a cup of tea.

This is pure unadulterated joy. I listened to it mostly in little 5 minute segments, both on my own or as a group. Will be revisiting this many times.

Amazing!!

You can’t not LOVE Whinnie the Pooh and his adventures with friends. The story is so sweet and innocent yet intriguing and funny. Couldn’t stop listening to it and the performance just made you want to keep listening. I was sad when it was over.
