About this listen

The New York Times bestseller, Win Every Argument is the ultimate audiobook guide to debate, persuasion and public speaking, written and read by award-winning British-American journalist Mehdi Hasan.

'A masterclass from one of the most formidable debaters and interviewers of our time' – Riz Ahmed

Arguments are everywhere – and especially given the fierce debates we’re all embroiled in today, everyone wants to win. In this riveting guide to the art of argument, Mehdi Hasan shows you how to communicate with confidence, rise above the tit for tats on social media, and triumph in a successful and productive debate in the real world.

Arguments help us solve problems, uncover new ideas we might not have considered, and nudge our disagreements toward mutual understanding. A good argument, made in good faith, has intrinsic value – and can also simply be fun.

As a journalist, anchor, and interviewer who has clashed with politicians, spy chiefs, and celebrities from across the world, Hasan reveals his tricks of the trade for the first time. Whether you are making a presentation at work or debating current political issues with a friend, Win Every Argument will teach you how to sharpen your speaking skills to make the winning case.

'Indispensable' – Naomi Klein, author of No Logo and The Shock Doctrine

Critic Reviews

A masterclass from one of the most formidable debaters and interviewers of our time (Riz Ahmed, filmmaker (Sound of Metal) and musician)
A tour de force! There is no better debater than Mehdi and this riveting read will help transform the most shy and retiring speaker into a charismatic polemicist. A masterclass (Owen Jones, author of The Establishment and This Land: The Struggle for the Left)
Mehdi Hasan relishes controversy and winning arguments. This is a combative and engaging ‘How To’ book for wannabe great performers in the studio and in public debate (Jonathan Dimbleby, broadcaster and author of Barbarossa: How Hitler Lost the War)
Packed with tips and techniques, as well as insights into the historical importance of disputes, negotiations and rows. Dale Carnegie focused on friends but Hasan has written its contemporary equivalent - How to Win Arguments and Influence People (Susanna Reid, broadcaster and journalist)
Whether it’s by the art of gentle persuasion or a full-on onslaught, if there’s one person who knows the art of winning an argument it’s the formidable Mehdi Hasan. I like to think I’m not bad at it, but I learned so much from reading this book (Iain Dale, broadcaster and author of The Prime Ministers)
I refused to write this blurb for Mehdi Hasan. He won that argument! Now I am doing it. That’s how good he is at arguing! I better start reading, quick (Judd Apatow, filmmaker (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Trainwreck) and author of Sick in the Head)
A masterpiece of rhetorical argument and effective persuasion! From Demosthenes to Churchill, Cicero to Martin Luther King, Hasan lays bare the essential elements of how to delight, instruct, and move an audience (Cornel West, philosopher, activist and author of Black Prophetic Fire)
Mehdi is a generationally talented interviewer. He has mastered his craft and in this book he generously spills his secrets (Jonathan Swan, political reporter for the New York Times)
Mehdi was one of the toughest interviews I did in the White House . . . includes the kind of specific advice and applicable tactics that will make readers want to finish the book and immediately go find a sparring partner (Jen Psaki, former White House Press Secretary)
Inside our digital echo chambers, it is far too easy to forgo persuasion in favor of performance. Yet Hasan reminds us that we will never change the world unless we change people’s minds. An indispensable handbook for our high-stakes and polarized times (Naomi Klein, author of The Shock Doctrine and No Is Not Enough)
Hugely entertaining, deeply knowledgeable, and filled with illuminating tips and stories . . . Read this book to find your own voice while learning both the art and history of persuasion (Ben Rhodes, author of After the Fall)

I was born arguing. I argued for everything but especially the attention of my parents who were already caring for my seven siblings. I knew I was good at getting my own way but I also felt guilty for the trail of destruction I sometimes left in my wake. Mr Hasan’s book/instruction manual was an eye opener into all the things I was doing right but more so, the things I was doing wrong. Oh I wish I’d read his book in the ninth grade…I’m sure I’d be helping more people, making more money and be living geographically closer to my lovely family. Alas, all is not lost, as my son, 14 will be listening to this book next. I am absolutely certain that this book will help him become more effective in life and less destructive than his mother. Xox thank you Mehdi and family!!

I’m so glad Mehdi narrated the book himself. The content, is of course, meticulously compiled, and researched, but it’s his energy and performance in the reading that takes it from just another ‘how to’ book into something that feels like a personal coaching session from the man himself. I have admired Mehdi for many years having lived and worked in London for a while. The people of the US are even now woefully underserved by his lack of a prime time daily show on US television. He is the ONLY worthy successor to Rachel Maddow. The book is ideally suited for consumption in the audiobook format because it includes audio of great historical o moments in oration as well as the passion of Mehdi himself. Can’t recommend more highly.

Come for the content- stay for the performance.

This book started strong then by Chapter 3 just became a big bragging session of all the arguments the author had won, followed by audio of said arguments. Clearly the author is very far left and politically driven, which for me as an Australian, is just plain irrelevant to my interest in this book, winning arguments. Clearly the author dislikes Donald Trump and he wastes quite a substantial amount of book space going on and on. I was well over it by the time Chapter 4 started and he went for Trump again. If you're a US political supporter, you'll love this. If you're a normal person like me, this will bore you to aggravation with the authors very biased agenda of proving he's the biggest gas lighting bully in the room.

Just 1 big egotistical brag

It is a well-researched book that talks about the ways to master rhetoric. However, the author is the primary focus, which sometimes turns into a self-praise fest about how great he is about putting down people.

Interesting, well researched, but all about the author
