Publisher's Summary

Words are messy. Love is messier.

Meet Beatrix Babbage - 29-year-old dog-earer of books and accidental destroyer of weddings. After ruining her best friend's nuptials, Bea relocates to the other side of the country in search of a fresh start, including meeting new people, living life to the fullest and finally pulling off balayage. But after a few months, life is more stagnant than ever.

Bea’s job is dead-end. Her romantic life? Nonexistent. And her only friends are her books, her barista and her cleaning lady. Then Bea stumbles across a secondhand novel, inscribed with notes. Besotted with the poetic inscriptions, Bea is determined to find the author...and along the way, she finds herself entangled in one hell of a love quadrangle.

Funny, poignant and insightful, While You Were Reading reveals that there’s no such thing as perfection, the value of true friendship and, most importantly, the power of not living in fiction, but still reading it...often.

Best book of 2019 for me

I loved this story so much. Bookish, romantic, funny uplit. Exactly what everyone needs in today’s day and age. I loved the references to cafe and pop culture, as well as how the story cleverly ties in “bookstagram” (the Instagram for books). Bea was a great female lead, and it was refreshing and fun to read about her.

Enjoyed it much more than I expected

At first I thought it was going to be another predictable soppy romance. But it was great! The characters were really likeable

Best book I've read in a long time

I don't usually read Romantic Comedies. But this one had me feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. Perfect read to relax, laugh, fall in love. Highly recommended!

Promising start, disappointing finish

The start of the book was catchy and had great promise, but ended predictably boring.

Disappointing

An experienced reader would clearly sense the shift between the two authors. Two many determining details were noted in the writing rather than woven into significance. It is quite disappointing as I really wanted to support Australian authors! Throwing big book titles did not help in making the story knowledgeable rather discredited the plot as condescending. Main character’s immaturity and hasty maturity at the end hints a publisher’s demand of a finished deadline. The book lacked harmony and is a poor attempt at commercial romance. It is mostly written in a screenplay mode as if the authors main goal was to score an episode in a popular sop opera! Shame. I only finished the book because I never leave a book unfinished.

Narrator is HARD to listen to

I couldn't listen to this narrator. No feeling, punctuation, No, just can't listen. It hurts my ears.
