Six years ago, Evie Cormac was found hiding in a secret room in the aftermath of a brutal murder. But nobody has ever discovered her real name or where she came from, because everybody who tries ends up dead.

He needs answers.

Forensic Psychologist Cyrus Haven believes the truth will set Evie free. Ignoring her warnings, he begins to dig into her past, only to disturb a hornet's nest of corrupt and powerful people who have been waiting to find Evie - the final witness to their crimes. Unbeknownst to him, Cyrus is leading them straight to Evie. The truth will not set her free. It will get them killed.

From Australia's foremost crime writer Michael Robotham, this is the second explosive novel featuring gifted criminal psychologist Cyrus Haven following the Edgar-award nominated Good Girl, Bad Girl.

An emotional king hit

I’ve always enjoyed Michael Robotham’s books but this was a masterpiece. A couple of warnings for anyone about to but this book, there’s a strong theme of child sex abuse which may be triggering for some and you need to read the first book in the series to appreciate this one. My heart broke numerous times hearing about Evie’s past, although it was strongly hinted at in the first book of the series, it becomes the focal point in this one. It’s a painful story to have unfold but MR presents the subject matter respectfully giving the character of Evie dignity and strength. I was surprised to feel a genuine fondness for a fictional character. This was a brilliant book if for no other reason than the emotional stories of Evie, Cyrus and numerous minor characters involved, although it’s a cleverly unfolding thriller as well. The narrator is brilliant, you forget that you’re listening to one person!

A Book That has Left Me Puzzled

As usual with Michael Robotham’s books I couldn’t put it down. The storyline is very relatable due to news items that have surfaced recently. It will be very interesting to read other reviews in regard to the narration. I found it so annoying.... chapter 3 stays in my mind but all through the book the different voices were distracting to the point that I was going to stop listening to the book.

If you enjoyed the first you'll enjoy this

after enjoying the first book in this series it was good to have the characters further developed in book 2 and a good story to continue. I'm curious if there will be a book 3 in this series.

Captivating

I was almost wishing that my commute wasn’t over yet because I wasn’t done listening and I didn’t want to stop. Very well narrated, really captivating story, good character development (consistent with book 1). Will look forward to more books from this series!

Complex and enjoyable all at once

Evie and Cyrus are complex characters, live how they are written. So enjoyable to listen to this, a real 'page' turner 😀

A Fascinating Read

Just as the novel before this one, I thoroughly enjoyed this read. The characters are so well shaped, the storyline so riveting that it is somehow almost overwhelming to read at times. I find these books harder to digest than others in this genre, but if you're wanting a great story to suck you in for the long haul, this would be the series for you.

Great read!

A great read. An intriguing story that slowly unfolds to reveal greater misyeris and secrets. Well paced and sadly realistic, it shows how dark influence and powers can control people lives and how the idea of justice can be enacted when everything else fails.

Fast paced story with great characters and one of the best narrators I’ve listened to.

Strange but Similar

I liked it very much but I did see a lot of Liz Salander and Mikael Blomkvist so I hope there is more to come.

Sadly, a too familiar plot line

No doubt it is a miserable year and when writing this the author would not have had an inkling. I grimly noticed a day in October 2020 that is referenced in the novel thinking, “ will most of us make it that far?” This is an indirect way of approaching the fact that this novel scarcely diverted me during any listening session . Cyrus is not a patch on the good old Jo from past series, Parkinsons or not. Jo the voice actor did a great job with often tedious, soulless writing. At least there was something to fill the deliberate holding back of the release of most novels during the pandemic.. or I wouldn’t have finished this book.

Excellent story

I suggest before you read this you read the first book as you need to have the back story to fully understand this book. The author has taken a very difficult storyline and has brought it to life through Evie and Cyrus. I will not say more as plenty of reviewers have said a lot about the story but I hope this is not the end of Cyrus and Evie. Please write a sequel Michael!

Good sequel to Good Girl Bad Girl

A good story, quite disturbing, but tense and enjoyable. There were some times when I was a disappointed in a reaction, or an action as I thought 'he/she wouldn't have thought or done that' but good overall.

A great read

Really enjoyed this follow up to the first book. I loved Michael Robotham's Joe O'Loughlin books and not disappointed with this series. Great story and characters. Good narrator. Couldn't stop listening.

A Return to Form for Michael Robotham

I miss Sean Barrett’s sure-footed narration and the Joe O’Loughlin character as this new Cyrus series follows Cyrus Haven, a rather oddball student of O’Loughlin. Book 1 in the series was OK but really not Robotham’s finest moment, and I was a little hesitant at first to buy this second in the series. However, I am delighted to report that it is a return to form for the writer. As to narrator, he has won me over to associate Cyrus Haven with him and I find he does suit the characters we encounter very well. The ending could be a real, and realistic-to-life ending, or it may have left the door open for a third book. Who knows? I’m not sure there’s enough depth of revelation or development left in the Evie Cormac/ Cyrus Haven relationship for another story to be well sustained, but I am happy to be proven wrong.

Disappointing

Not a patch on the Joe Mcloughlin books. The story was very harrowing in parts, explicit child abuse isn't something many people would want to listen to for entertainment. Previous books by Robotham have kept me enthralled with the twists and clever story lines. This one made me want to get it over and done with I nearly gave up several times but kept going hoping for something unexpected towards the end. The narrator was OK but not a patch on Sean Barratt who brings colorful, menacing and believable traits to the characters. Bring back Joe and Ruiz.
