Publisher's Summary

The 11th book in the Sunday Times best-selling Inspector McLean series, from one of Scotland's most celebrated crime writers.

The charred remains of an elderly woman are discovered in a burned-out gamekeeper's cottage, hidden away in woodland to the west of Edinburgh. Clearly no accidental fire, Detective Inspector Tony McLean suspects that neither is this simply a grim arson attack. There is far more to the victim than her humble surroundings might suggest, and something ritualistic to her horrific murder.

Nor will it be the only case of death by fire that Tony and his team will be faced with. This is only the beginning, and with such evil clouding the air, Tony begins to wonder what else will burn....

The best Tony McLean book so far. I loved it!

What Will Burn is the best in the series so far, which is surprising in such a long-running series. And so much better than the previous book, Bury Them Deep. It is heartening to read a male author addressing the ugliness of the global men's rights movement, and the scourge of domestic violence.

Ian Hanmore's narration is excellent as always. His voice is perfect for these Edinburgh-based crime novels.

Is Tony getting tired

I enjoyed the book. I have enjoyed the journey with these characters however I sense a kind of weariness. In this story there’s a certain feeling of Ex Machina to wrap the story up. The part of Tony that is drawn into this world is no longer being explored, he’s just there doing his thing and we have to accept it.
The narration as always is spot on.
I look forward to the next book but I do wonder if there is to be some progress in the life of DI McLean.

no need for the overlay of music

love these books ,i hate the musical nonsense in the last chapter ,it's just irritating and makes the listening tricky for me . overproduction ,there is no need. the only thing it does is boost the ego of the producer , go get a job in a music studio.

Best yet

Absolutely hooked from beginning to end.
Brilliant narration by Ian Hanmore as always.
Just on a production point- I do dislike it when the narrative just stops and the credits kick in immediately. With this the mood music at the beginning and end really enhanced the atmosphere and the wind down. I do wish others productions would do the same.
Can’t wait for the next one!

Its a great combination of gritty crime drama and other worldly influences. Fabulous.

Another Inspector McLean winner

So thrilled to find this latest James Oswald novel revisiting all the well known characters. The story continues and the atmosphere is conjured up by a great narrator.

Complete disappointment

I used to like James Oswald's earlier books in this series and looked out for new ones but sadly I have to say that they have become more and more unbelievable and this one was really ridiculous from start to finish. Ian Hanmore did his best in the reading of the book but very little he could do to make it credible or interesting. If you could give zero stars in the reviews I would have done so.

A shame but a complete waste of time ... not at all sure why I continued to the end!

Another McLean classic

Love this series, this one isn’t one of the best in the series but still a great book. Great to have Madame Rose back! Ian Hanmore does a great job bringing the book to life once more. Roll on next February to catch up with Tony and the gang again
