About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Colm Healy used to be one of the Met's best detectives. Until, haunted by the unsolved murders of a mother and her twin daughters, his failure to find an elusive killer left his life in ruins.
Missing persons investigator David Raker is the only friend Healy has left. As they reopen the investigation together, Raker learns the hard way how this case breeds obsession - and how an unsolvable puzzle can break even the best detective.
Their search takes them down a trail of darkness, unravelling a thread of tragedy, and forces them to sacrifice everything they have left.

This book should have been cut by a quarter. The pace is slowed by repetitions and unnecessary explanations of Raker, the investigator's, thoughts and perceptions. It's either deliberately padded, or written for slow-witted readers. That's a shame, because the plot is interesting and complex. We have here too the device of an angsty, dysfunctional budding romance, unfortunately so common in this genre. The love interest here, though, takes the cake for her repulsive personality. She's passive-aggressive, unimaginative, devoid of sympathy or empathy and a bit slow on the uptake.

Good plot but slow moving
