About this listen

Sheila O'Flanagan is the best-selling author of The Missing Wife and My Mother's Secret, and her new best seller What Happened That Night, with its enticing story of mothers, daughters and lovers, will enchant listeners who love the novels of Marian Keyes and Lisa Jewell.

Lola has a plan. She's going to escape the village she grew up in and make it in the big city. She's smart enough - but she's also headstrong. When, one evening, she has to make a life-changing choice, she decides quickly, and without the full facts. But there's no way back.

Bey is every bit her mother's daughter. An impulsive decision puts her in the path of great danger. She's left wary of trusting her own judgement ever again. Then, one night, she's standing in front of the man she loves, with her own choice to make.

For both women, everything changes in a moment. But their biggest mistakes might also turn out to be their greatest opportunities....

The story line is predictable but so are most love stories. The narrator is very versatile with her characters.

It’s a good book. It was just a little slow in places but still light and enjoyable.

Aoife McMahon as the narrator is the star of this book. Her limitless talent for storytelling and the way she breathes life and emotion into the characters is astounding. The story of Lola and Bey was nice. Early in the book - set in the 80's - I did struggle through the situations and attitudes relating to class, social standing and gender. It wasn't all that long ago, but the concepts and behaviours are so foreign to us these days, I felt frequent outrage throughout the whole book, which I didn't enjoy.
I do wish there was more focus on the romantic aspects although it's clear that romantic love wasn't a priority for Lola and Bey, so didn't feature in the story.
Great book. Sheila O'Flanagan has done it again.

An engaging 21 century read about the strength and independence of a woman that finds her worth. Loving every single novel of Sheila O’Flanagan’s novels. Thank you
