Story
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

KATE, 2019
Kate flees London – abandoning everything – for Cumbria and Weyward Cottage, inherited from her great-aunt. There, a secret lurks in the bones of the house, hidden ever since the witch-hunts of the 17th century.
VIOLET, 1942
Violet is more interested in collecting insects and climbing trees than in becoming a proper young lady. Until a chain of shocking events changes her life forever.
ALTHA, 1619
Altha is on trial for witchcraft, accused of killing a local man. Known for her uncanny connection with nature and animals, she is a threat that must be eliminated.
But Weyward women belong to the wild. And they cannot be tamed…
Weaving together the stories of three women across five centuries, Weyward is an enthralling novel of female resilience and the transformative power of the natural world.

Did not come up for breath until it was over!
A wonderful story thing 3 women together through family, a love of nature and the sanctuary of an English cottage passed down generations. I love stories with dual timelines and this one had three! Not difficult to follow and all came together beautifully in the final chapters. Highly recommend

Good story, well told
I have read several books that cover the topic of witches and witch trials well. They include enough history and truth to convey the severity of how witches and women who were deemed different were treated, but without me wanting the slit my own throat. This book did a good job and I enjoyed listening to it. I purchased another title at the same time and returned it after an hour of listening. This is not the best book on the subject but certainly not the worst.

Gripping
I was in for the journey of this story. It was woman based and so right up my genre alley.
At first, I was a bit annoyed by how the author jumped between time periods and storylines so often. It didn’t take long before I was invested in each of the main characters and in the end, I was hanging off every extra layer of each woman’s tale.

Could not stop listening
I could not stop listening! tackles the inter generational connection of women. Despite the difference in times their stories are interconnected and their experiences and struggles similar. The writing is beautiful and vivid, sad and confronting. Does an amazing job of capturing the complex nature of abuse and the patriarchal oppression of women over time. So well written! Highly recommend.
