Publisher's Summary

I remember the lights.

I remember I wanted to photograph them, the way the red and blue splashed across his cold, emotionless face. But I knew even if my feet could move from the place where they had cemented themselves to the ground and I could run for my camera, I wouldn't be able to capture that moment.

I had trusted him, I had loved him, and even though my body had changed that summer, he'd made sure to help me hold on to who I was inside, regardless of how the exterior altered.

But then everything changed.

He stole my innocence. He scarred my heart. He took everything I thought I knew about my life and fast-pitched it out the window, shattering the glass that held my world together in the process.

I remember the lights.

The passionate, desperate, hot strikes of red. The harsh, cruel, icy bolts of blue.

They symbolized everything I endured that summer.

And everything I would never face again.

✫✫ 4 Stars ✫✫

This is almost like 2 books in one. The first half is about a girl with serious self-esteem issues and how she is learning to make the changes she needs to become a stronger women. Then BAM the 2nd half is suspense/mystery kind of. That being said I loved the 1st story line so much! I could feel exactly what she was feeling and I cheering her on. But the rest of the story was a little obvious for me, sort of saw that coming from a million miles away. The love story was perfect, Rhodes was perfect, he was the only one in her life who loved her the way she was and wanted her to be happy with herself. I did very much enjoy this story and couldn't stop listening.

Wow, this book took me by surprise!

I really loved this book! The main character is dealing with the heartbreak of her high school sweetheart breaking up with her the summer after high school. She has to figure out what to do with her life, and discover who she really is.

A touching story

I have no doubt this story has touched many who have read it. The story line is intriguing, keeps the readers attention, and tugs at the heart strings. It's full of great characters: the witty best friend, the ex-boyfriend who is no longer a reflection of who Natalie once knew, the mother who expects everything to be just right for appearances, and two main characters that make this book sizzle.

He's dark and brooding with the weight of his past holding him down. She's the light, a free spirit, untouched by the perils of life.

"Sometimes, the darkness is where you find yourself."

Just the amount of insightful and touching quotes one can take away from this story is worth the read alone.

Now, only two things bothered me about this story/performance. From a narration, it grated my nerves regarding the pronunciation of Appalachian. For those who live near the Appalachians, without a doubt, they would say Appa-LATCH-uh. If you say Appa-LAY-shuh you are not only identifying the mountain range but you are also announcing to all that you are not from there. You can say a lot in just one word. So that just didn't match with the character profile. From a writing stance, the author kept elongating Appalachian State when mentioning it, but those who talk about it often, the characters would be calling it App State instead. So small things, but annoying.

Amazing

Probably one of my favorite books. Very relatable and inspirational as well. I wish I could find more books like this one, but surprisingly, I haven't found many!

nasal narrator

this female needs to not narrate, ever. if you want to listen to her speak through her nose and her poor reading is terrible. don't bother, folks.

Wonderfully Angsty

Wonderfully angsty with the perfect amount of mystery. I was hooked from the prologue. This has been on my TBR forever so glad I finally got a chance to read it.

SPECTACULAR WRITING! NEW FAN!!!!!

This was my first time reading Kandi Steiner's work (read book too both were good) and let me tell you...it was AMAZING!! This book encapsulates everything readers look for in a great book. A little angst, romance, and stunning writing that draws you in. I've read/listened to a lot of books by a lot of author's. I've come across plenty bad apples that were a total waste of time. But this...this right here...is a GEM. It took me by surprise. It was two-fold; the first part dealt with the H's insecurities, self-esteem issues., and learning who she was after a bad break-up. The second; a BLAST of suspense. YOU DON'T SEE IT COMING. I found myself listening into the wee hours of the night because the sudden chaos made me want to find out the outcome. I loved how this author used little tell-tale signs throughout each chapter and it was thoroughly executed towards the end. She didn't leave you hanging wondering what various things meant. Everything made sense, and was cleverly woven together. Again I can't stress how awesome it was to read a book that was beautifully executed. I'm excited to explore more from this author. 5-Stars!!!!

Deus ex machina

I'm sorry but that's not how you end a book, it's not believable or fulfilling as a reader.

Disappointing story development

This started off with promise and I can say that the writing was inviting and engaging. What led to my clear dislike of the book were the weak main characters with a propensity to repeatedly flip-flop emotionally and the lack of depth to the storyline. I can say I disliked the hero Rhodes, he messed the heroine, Natalie around ridiculously. She was a sap, she started her weight loss journey because of a boy and orientated her life and self around her next relationship.

There were unbelievable turns in the story especially (view spoiler)

My heart sunk when I got past midway in this audio, the story deteriorated, the characters lost my engagement. I can’t recommend this book and I’m sad about my experience because I’ve heard a lot of good about this author. Maybe I chose the wrong book, maybe I’ll try again with another book at some point.

The narration was strong throughout and that helped me to finish the audiobook.
