Publisher's Summary

A Green Beret's gripping memoir of American Special Forces in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War.

In 1970, on his second tour to Vietnam, Nick Brokhausen served in Recon Team Habu, CCN. Officially, it was known as the Studies and Observations group. In fact, this Special Forces squad, which Brokhausen calls "an unwashed, profane, ribald, joyously alive fraternity", undertook some of the most dangerous and suicidal reconnaissance missions ever in the enemy-controlled territory of Cambodia and Laos.

But they didn't infiltrate the jungles alone. They fought alongside the Montagnards - oppressed minorities from the mountain highlands, trained by the US military in guerrilla tactics, armed, accustomed to the wild, and fully engaged in a war against the North Vietnamese.

Together, this small unit formed the backbone of ground reconnaissance in the Republic of Vietnam, racking up medals for valor - but at a terrible cost.

I’m glad I wasn’t there. But I wish I were

This book was fantastic. It was fun and terrifying to listen too. The antics the sog guys get up to are second to none

Hair-raising and entertaining. Great book overall

There is a lot of interesting detail about life as recon/special forces in Vietnam. Some of the battle descriptions are vivid and suspenseful. The author loves to use analogy (sometimes a little too much) and his descriptions of people/places/events can be a little over-wrought at times, but I came to enjoy his style. I would definitely recommend this book. I was confused and disappointed by the abrupt end - don't expect a conclusion or post-script.

Best Vietnam war book

Highly recommend We Few and Whispers in the tall grass. Hard to beat in terms of action humour and tragedy.

A gritty, comedic and brilliant retelling 👍🏻👍🏻

Are the SF ‘Recon’ teams not the toughest, and more obviously… crazy SOB’s ever??

Yes they are. Listen to this Audiobook and find out why.

A great story with no conscience

I really enjoyed this story of men surviving awful situations thru childish ribbing of each-other and you feel as if you are there in the jungle! Every mission is intense, pointless and has no outcome but the killing of a few enemy, then to fly away in their helicopters. You feel for these young men put in a situation of intense stress and can only pity them when they hit civilian street and wonder how they could process normal life? It was disappointing that the writer does not examine his soul, intellect, purpose or if it's ok to kill all these people? Despite this a great listen.
