Publisher's Summary

Winner of the 2019 Audie Award for Best Male Narrator with an afterword read by the author

A “superior thriller” (Oakland Press) about a man, a dog, and a terrifying threat that could only have come from the imagination of #1 New York Times bestselling author Dean Koontz - nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read.

On his thirty-sixth birthday, Travis Cornell hikes into the foothills of the Santa Ana Mountains. But his path is soon blocked by a bedraggled Golden Retriever who will let him go no further into the dark woods.

That morning, Travis had been desperate to find some happiness in his lonely, seemingly cursed life. What he finds is a dog of alarming intelligence that soon leads him into a relentless storm of mankind’s darkest creation....

Super stoked

What a book! The blurb didn’t read amazingly to me, however, it truly was an amazing read. The story is utterly incredible and you fall in love with the wonderful characters. I wish it didn’t end . Read it! ( or listen ;)

One of Dean Koontz's best stories, wonderfully narrated. Well worth the purchase price. I'm off to the library to download more now.

A middle aged mormon sci fi nerd's wet dream?

What was this nonsense. I mean. wow this is bad. Had a promising open and then it's just weird jarring nonsense for the sake of it. delta force and wonder pooch take on the baddies and moralise their way through the tenderloin like they read about it in a comic. It's almost like Koontz not so subtly dedicated this to rugged misogynists worldwide. Dean Koontz wrote a black character jiving about the pains of being a brother, like an awkward tactless tonedeaf centre dem larping as a black cop hunting baboon bigfoot. Basically I'm disappointed I don't have the paperback because at least I could clean myself after passing faeces. there could be some kind of redemption for the text in that scenario. but not now Watchers made me more stupid.

Dated and cliched characters

I was only able to get thru 5 hours. Got this book based on the reviews that this was considered his best work (also the author’s opinion). This might have been true back in the day as it was published in the late 80’s. Sadly it hasn’t with stood the test of time. Bad guys are really bad, good guys are only good. Women are either meek virgins or whores, both of which are to be f”@&d and beaten—ugh! Top notch authors today create characters that are flawed and complex and it’s hard to really categorize them as either only good or bad as we all have both. I found myself rolling my eyes and getting annoyed multiple times as the two dimensional characters were rolled out, straight jacketed by their stereotypes. If this was a YA novel, this might actually be acceptable which could possibly explain why when they made the movie, Travis was played by a teenage actor. Even the dog Einstein which was the reason I decided to get this book was also sadly cliched — as in Lassie but with human intelligence or more. The concept had potential but again it was limited to the era it was written in when people (and animals apparently) could only check one of two boxes.

A stunning masterpiece that leaves you with hope.

I don't normally write reviews but this story has left me awestruck. Dean Koontz's greatest work in my opinion. At the end you will be left with a great hope for the world and a realization of the power of connections made with others, be it humans, dogs, or any other form of life capable of love.

Absolutely splendid. A 'tail waging' worthy tale indeed.

In a 2003 interview, DK said, "Watchers is the best book I've ever written...it's my finest hour." And I wholeheartedly agree. Watchers is a true masterpiece of fiction. There's no doubt that this novel will continue to stand the test of time. Eduardo Ballerini's performance is, quite simply, beautiful. Whether the characters are human, monsters, animals, or NSA agents, the life and depth of emotion he brings out in them is unparalleled. MY HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

The Best of Koontz

Koontz is my favorite. I have read many of his works and this is, by far, the best of them. The book is 30 years old, but this is my first introduction to it. The story stands the test of time with themes of love and friendship. On a deeper level, Koontz addresses the morality of genetic testing, the power of the individual versus the government, and the meaning of life. I cried at the end simply because it was over.

kept me awake all night,

loved this book to pieces. Will listen to it many more times to come. At times I am so cynical in regards to our human race, especially when it comes to the cruelty people are capable of inflicting on animals, that it's difficult to believe we might ever rise above some of the more base aspects of our nature. While I was listening to this story, it was as if my heart was being relieved for a time of that knowledge. The novel actually shines as a ray of hope for what we might become. And, it was just a damn awesome story! kudos Mr. Koonz

Such a wonderful story!

Just a beautiful story of love and loyalty, in all it’s two and four legged varieties. I can see why people say this is Koontz’s best work. Be warned- it’s going to give you major dog fever :)

Nonsense?

Honestly, i mean its like the author took a big bag of mixed tiles with themes and dramatic situations written on them then selected some blindly from the bag to put into this story. However, apparently he selected every single high drama, wild idea, conspiracy theory and alphabet agency in the bag to write about and then attempted to smash it all into one story. My take, nonsense... Not even remotely could i place myself in this bizarro world he created to make it somewhat believable that in even an alternate universe could i find myself in the shoes of the protagonist.

Not a bad story, but...

The overall story itself was pretty good. The only issue that I had with its is there are sequences where he goes on descriptive tangents that could easily be finished with 1 or 2 sentences but tends to drone on for 4 or 5 minutes. Over all I would definitely recommend this book.

Best book by Dean Koontz

This may have been one of his earliest books but it’s my favourite. It’s got everything you could want in what he calls a rip roaring good story.

For Dog Lovers

A strange headline for a review, but what can I say. It is a great and truly original story. And a bonus for dog lovers. I felt sorry for the outsider though. The narrator is so good that I searched for him for my next reads!
