Publisher's Summary

Marriage to an elf is complicated...especially bringing him home to meet the family.

Princess Elspeth of Escarland married the elf prince and achieved peace between the elves and her human people. But after a recent ambush by the trolls, it is clear the trolls are trying to start a war between the elves and humans once again. To keep their peoples at peace, Essie and Farrendel travel to meet Essie’s family and negotiate a stronger alliance.

Yet in Escarland, not everyone is happy with peace. Traitors lurk in both Escarland and Tarenhiel, and it will be up to Essie and Farrendel to flush them out. The consequences of failure might be more personal and deadly than they can imagine.

A Solid Reading

I'd been waiting for this one to be released, having read the first three books of the series already, and having enjoyed the audiobook of the first quite a bit.

This one was as solid as the first in terms of variety of voices and a crisp reading. The only complaint I have is that sometimes her voice for Essie is too fast, passing from rapid chatter into something manic. I dialed the speed down to 90% and was happy. I didn't feel the need to do that with the first book.

Book two is different from book one in a number of ways--it's more plot driven, for one. The world has been established, the characters have been introduced. It also has sections told from Farendel's POV. Pro tip: Go to the author's website and download the short story that tells the events of the first few chapters of the first book from his POV before beginning this one. It flows well that way.

If you are new to the series, consider waiting just a smidge to listen. The third book is due to be released soon on audiobook, and there is a hellish cliffhanger on this one. If you've already read them and just want the audiobook for a re-read, buy with confidence.

Overall, the series is very strong. I'm not a huge fan of slow burn (which this absolutely is) OR very much into "clean romance," which this absolutely is, but I do love a good story, which this also is. In the end, I stayed for the story (and it IS romantic).

Disappointed

Not sure what happened here...not what I hoped for.
- Voice over is pleasant to listen to but not the different voices. All the ladies sound 14 and irritating and naive. In book 1 the Prins sounded shy and insecure but the imitation here was that he was rude and cold.
- Book 1 had a slow start, but ended in a battle, heartbond and new journey. Most of Book 2 could have been summarized in 2 to 3 chapters. With again all the excitement happening an hour before the book finished.
Expected more from the book and it was hard to finish.

Liz Brand narration would be great for children’s book!

I like the plot. But overall I think this book is fitting for teens. Liz Brand sounds like excited 10 Year old.

very long

the story is a good story but it was very boring for a long time. It could have been in one book instead of two for sure. not very much excitement going on until you get to the end of each book.

This audiobook is incredible!

I feel like I'm fairly unusual in my audiobook habits. I have a tendency to put them on 1.25x or 1.50x speed. That was not the case, here! The speed of narration was perfect, as was the narrator's emotion and voices for the characters.

I'll admit that having already read the book myself, I was a bit nervous to listen to the audio. What if the narrator's perception and portrayal of the characters didn't match what I had in my mind?

That was not the case! Essie and Farrendel were just as sweet and bubbly in the audiobook as they were in my head.

I listen to a lot of audiobooks, and this is definitely among my favorites; it totally got me through my homework last week.

I say it in every review for the books in this series, and I know other people say it too, but this really fulfills a need that the fantasy genre, and in fact most genres, rarely get. There's suspense and action, yes, but the story focuses on the growing of relationships, not just romantically but also familial and platonic ones. There's not a lot of angst, just a lot of beautiful stress-free growth that makes me feel as if I'm growing with the characters. There's some incredibly beautiful quotes on growth and friendship and love. (I read it on my Kindle before listening to the audio and I was doing some serious highlighting.)

In Book 1 we saw Essie adapting to Elven culture, and now in Book 2 we see Farrendel learning to adapt to life in Escarland and trying to build relationships with Essie's family members. Farrendel is so shy and sweet and it's so endearing and heartwarming.

There is just the right balance between the growth of relationships and political suspense that keeps you drawn in to the larger plot on a whole. For the beginning of this book the focus is on Farrendel's personal growth, and his relationships with those around him. However throughout the plot you see a sprinkling of the action and suspense that later comes to a climax to propel you into the next book.

A great addition to the story

The narration was good and the story was compelling. I enjoyed the continuation of the love between the two characters and getting to see the family learn to love her husband as well. Credit worthy.

Traitor's, hair and war on the horizon.

This book had me laughing so much, the humourous banter was absolutely perfect. The slow burn romance between Essie and Farrendel is more natural and believable, even to the point of making you swoon. I really love the two families and how they interact with each other, both are very different and have a very interesting cultural background. The storyline is really well written, and you hear bits of backstory over the course of the series. Tara Grayce describes the world in so much detail, that if you close your eyes you can picture it. She's a great up and coming author who brought an amazing story to life, once you start reading this series you won't want to put it down.
