Publisher's Summary

A decadent rock star. A deeply religious radio host. A disgraced scientist. And a teenage girl who may be the world's last hope. From the mind of Chuck Wendig comes an astonishing tapestry of humanity.

Shana wakes up one morning to discover her little sister in the grip of a strange malady. She appears to be sleepwalking. She cannot talk and cannot be woken up. And she is heading with inexorable determination to a destination that only she knows. But Shana and her sister are not alone. Soon they are joined by a flock of sleepwalkers from across America, on the same mysterious journey. And, like Shana, there are other 'shepherds' who follow the flock to protect their friends and family on the long dark road ahead.

For on their journey, they will discover an America convulsed with terror and violence, where this apocalyptic epidemic proves less dangerous than the fear of it. As the rest of society collapses all around them and an ultraviolent militia threatens to exterminate them, the fate of the sleepwalkers depends on unravelling the mystery behind the epidemic. The terrifying secret will either tear the nation apart or bring the survivors together to remake a shattered world.

Breathtaking storyline

I usually don't read (listen) to books. I'd say I've probably finished a total of 20 books tops in my life as I usually grow tired of them quickly...
However, for Wanderers and specifically the magnificent voice acting from Xe and Dominic, I couldn't take my attention away and will look forward to their next reading.

Can't recommend enough. It's long, but not long enough!

EPIC

What a ride. I loved it. Narration has a few flaws, however in Hoffman and Sands defence this is a difficult ask to get perfect. As always though, it's the lack of finesse from American narrators with world accents that provide the most annoyance. Back to the story itself though. The long slow burn was well worth it. ( Does make it SO hard when it's over though! You tend to feel very bereft that your visit to that world is now over. ) I would like to see this particular dystopian trope played out elsewhere than the USA sometime though. The lunatic far left lawless new nazi militia tends to dominate and terrorise and is a focal point that has to be dealt with and - for me - has become quite tedious as a constant enemy. It would be refreshing to imagine what other enemies humanity has to deal with. The Wanderers is good solid escapist fare which had me greedily listening from start to finish though and thoroughly "enjoying" the immersion. Well worth purchasing. chuck Wendig, if you're listening, I am sure I am not the only one who would love a follow up.

What an awesome ride

This story kept surprising me right up to the very end. It was well written though I did notice a couple of grammatical gaffes in a couple of places, overall I thoroughly enjoyed it. it was also great to hear two voices doing the job where normally I prefer one, but in this case, with the story told by many different perspectives it worked out really well. a very good read and/or listen.

Loved it!

I loved everything about this book. The storyline, the way it was read and everything in between.

But this now

One of the best books I have listened to: extraordinary writing, great character development, 32 hours of pure entertainment. The whole story is well written with great twists some might be predictable but others surprise you from nowhere. I also would like to mention the narrators who have done a fantastic work, top notch voice acting. I knew which character was speaking at all times. I would listen to any books they narrated. Same goes for the writer.

Good apocalyptic story

A bit close to home in 2022! Written in 2019, a virus 'caught from bats' that causes major societal issues..... somewhat prophetic!
Fortunately, ours didn't quite go as badly...
A few loose ends that could have been resolved and I felt that the ending was a bit open ended.
