Publisher's Summary

The number one best-selling author returns with a highly charged thriller taking Amos Decker, who has proved one of his readers’ favourite characters to date, on an action-packed investigation with all the trademark twists and turns which make David Baldacci one of the world’s favourite storytellers.

FBI consultant Amos Decker and his colleague, Alex Jamison, are summoned to the remote North Dakota Badlands when a hunter discovers the remains of a woman out on the Great Plains. She appears to have had a postmortem performed on her, reminiscent of those seen on TV cop shows – but this time, there was no slab, morgue or camera in sight. The reason why Irene Cramer’s murder merits an FBI investigation becomes rapidly clear when key questions surface about the woman’s mysterious past. As a teacher at a school managed by a local male-run sect, the Anabaptists, little is known about who she really was or where she came from. What was her true identity? And what did she have to hide?

Seeking information from the local community, Decker and Jamison observe the local town of London, North Dakota, which sits at the very heart of the fracking industry. Oil money, jealousy and a deep-set rivalry between its richest investors lie beneath a veneer of glitz and opulence.

But it is the nearby ‘eye in the sky’, the London Air Force Station, which may hold the answers. Acting as an early warning system, it can detect a nuclear threat to the US. Was Irene Cramer’s death connected in some way to the highly classified facility? When a mysterious government contact reaches out to assist their investigation, Decker realises that this town holds secrets so explosive that their implications could destabilise the entire country....

Didn’t grab me this time

I have read all the books in this series and for me the story crossed the line between implausible fiction and plain silly. The whole airforce base thread was undeveloped and incongruous with the main story. People were dropping like flies for no good reason. The narration was a bit too exaggerated this time which did nothing to improve the overall experience.

Tangled Tale Tests Memory Man

This is not the best Decker, though still intriguing. Balducci continues to use the model of a man who can't forget, combined witha form of synesthesia to solve mysteries. It would be great to see side-kick Jamieson's character develop into more than a Greek chorus.

Brilliant as usual

Another riveting book by David Baldacci made even better by excellent narrators. Love Kyf Brewer and Orlagh Cassidy. They could narrate the telephone book and make it sound interesting. Thankyou David from a very grateful Australian reader.

A poor attempt to bring 2 series together

I have generally enjoyed the Amos Decker series but this story was simply disappointing and felt like an awkward attempt force the Will Robie novels where there was no need. Such a shame.

Another brilliant masterpiece

Loved it from start to finish, not quite as much as the earlier books in the Amos Decker series but immensely nevertheless. Captivating, brilliantly crafted and original, this had me hanging and warmed my heart. Wonderful narrators kept up a fast, flowing pace. I was delighted to see Amos meet Will Robie and Michelle, I'm excited to see where the series goes.

Two books in one!

4 of our favorite characters in a fast paced, action-packed story, Almost too much story to handle.....Nah! Really loved it.

Wow

I actually just want to write that. However I need to write at least 15 words. Let me think.... Actually already more than 15 words: I don’t know ho David Baldacci will top this in the future, but I will definitely waiting. Impatiently. Amos and Alex and the other two appearances seems like Christmas comes early for me !

Never a dud with David

I love David Baldacci. His books are always fresh - even though most of the characters are now well known to the legion of fans. In this latest book, 2 of his main characters (and their offsiders) meet up to help each other get to the end of their respective cases. I didn't know who the villain was until the last few pages so I enjoyed this book right to the end. Keep it up, DB.

Exhilarating and encapsulating.

The research and thought provoking storyline keeps the reader engaged from the opening credits to the last line. Evolution of characters are well worth following and this installment will not disappoint the avid follower of the series

Too many "saids"

There are too many times Decker said...Jamieson said.... More variety of dealing with conversation needed e.g. ..... replied Jamieson or .... was Jamieson's response or Jamieson queried Decker's comment. Would make the story flow better and not feel so stunted.

Strange mix of narration and dramatization

As another reviewer has said, too many 'she said's. That reviewer thinks changing the narrative verb would help but my query is: Why have a different voice? and still have 'she said'. Very disturbing. Just couldn't get past that.

Disappointment

Having enjoyed the previous books featuring Amos I was very disappointed with this latest one . There was no sign of his wonderful powers in this book and considering his partner was a FBI agent she came across as stupid. She was constantly asking inane questions. Will not be purchasing any more books featuring “The Memory Man”

Excellent

I love all of Baldacci's series but the Amos decker and Will robie series have been two of my favourites. To get them together in this book was a stroke of pure genius. I will definitely be adding the physical book to my collection as well as this audio book. Wod recommend it to anyone who enjoys the Authors other series but maybe don't start with this one 😂😉

You can't go wrong with this series.

The story of Decker and James on just keep evolving. The characters get better and the narrative deepens with each book. The story revolving about just the 2 of them without the team investigating helps with the expansion and growth.

Did not like as much as the rear of the series.

I have listens to the rest of this series, and enjoyed. But I found it difficult to get into this one and stay with it.
