This is War and Peace I the original Russian. The narrator uses a great variety of inflexion in his voice to convey the emotions of different characters. And for me, a non-native speaker of Russian, this was an amazing way to build up my language through listening. I’m already fluent in Russian but nonetheless have always found it hard to understand quotes from classical literature. I have also always felt a little literally impoverished by the fact that I’d never engaged with Russian literature much before. Now I’ve listened to all of War and Peace in the original Russian and understood it. What an achievement. I feel more confident using high register or “posh” Russian because of the book and also i learnt a lot of military and historic terminology. Tolstoy is also just a joy to experience. He has the humour of Pushkin and some of the depth of Dostoevsky but without so much depression! Loved it. If you want to boost your Russian, listen to this.
