Armut sei keine Pflicht des Weisen, solange der Reichtum ehrlich verdient und überlegt eingesetzt werde. Er sah sich selbst aber nicht als vollkommenen Weisen: "Ich preise das Leben, nicht wie ich es führe, sondern wie ich weiß, dass es geführt werden muss." Doch seine Gewissheit war, dass er der Tugend, wenn er ihr auch hinterherhinke, doch stetig folge.
