A very enjoyable listen.

Set at the end of WWII this is a spy story to keep you fascinated. The characters are well rounded and believable as are their adventures. Not as wildly elaborate as a James Bond story, but very worth the listen. I’m about to move on to the next book. So it must be good!

Good story, badly delivered.

Had I not already listened to and enjoyed the two preceding stories by the author I would have given up on the first chapter as it was so very badly narrated.

This book is terrible

Whoever hired this narrator has ruined this book. I listened to The Swiss spy and The best of our spy’s narrated by Stephen Critchlow and he brought the story to life from the first minute of listening, this narrator has made me restart the book 3 times because I’ve realised I’ve switched off and haven’t been listening. His delivery is shocking flat and boring, he sounds like a posh English news reader. I can’t even make it to the end of the book 3 hours in again and I don’t know what’s going on I’ve switched off again. Book retuned. Very disappointed as I really enjoyed Alex Gerlis’ other two books.

Suspense? Thrills? Action? No :(

This is a spy story, so fast-paced action isn’t expected, but you’ve got to get some suspense and ‘thrills’ in there. This story falls very flat. It picks up towards the end, but that leaves about 30 chapters of mediocrity. I liked the narrator, but I’m not sure if it was him or the author that made some (a fair amount) of the dialogue really clunky. Like he was reading it for the first time and had no idea where pauses or inflections should go. I finished the book, and won’t return it, but would have quite quickly with hindsight.

Unnecessarily voyeuristic

Disjointed and unimaginative this largely voyeuristic book was disappointing to say the least. Further let down by a poor narrator, this book is not worth the time required to listen to it. It’s only redeeming quality is the authors note at the end which contains a few tit bits of interesting historical insights into the era.

Gentle style but tense thriller!

What I found very interesting and unusual is that such a tense thriller could have a gentle writing style and a story that was not action-packed. Rather, the details and pace seemed realistic (so not like Kiefer Sutherland's 24). Historically the description of the period and wartime Vienna was incredibly interesting and thought-provoking - as a reader I really felt I understood it and could almost experience it.

Very happy to have listened to this!

Fairly traditional spite narrstive

Based on real events it conveys the courage of those who tried to defy the Nazis.

Narrator needs a new career

Gerlis is is a top writer. The story is involved, detailed and gripping. The narrator however, isn’t. He lacks any nuance and does not seem to think about the words he is reading. Any accent he attempts is at best half-hearted. I struggle with why the publisher persists with Bush. Critchlow brings The Best of Spies and The Swiss Spy to life but this book was almost killed by the poor narrator.

Boring

I struggled through this work. I am not totally sure it was the author’s work or the narrator but I could not recommend this to any listener.

A Ripping Yarn

Good spy story and fab alternative to the drivel and depression peddled as news on BBC Radio on the way into work.
