Fue torturado y asesinado en el antiguo Estadio Chile (que después fue denominado Estadio Víctor Jara) por fuerzas represivas de la dictadura de Augusto Pinochet, poco después del golpe militar que derrocó al gobierno de Salvador Allende, el 11 de septiembre de 1973.
