Juni 1928 in Guatemala geboren. Er beginnt 1952 ein Medizinstudium, da er selbst starkes Asthma hat und armen Menschen helfen möchte. Allerdings wird er diesen Traum nicht in die Tat umsetzen, da er seine beiden, stetig miteinander ringenden Bestrebungen nicht vereinbaren kann: Er will zwar einerseits Menschen helfen, die unter so schrecklichen Krankheiten wie er leiden, aber auch andererseits Größeres erreichen, wie zum Beispiel Tausende aus den Fängen der Diktatur retten.
