Erich Willner ist wieder auf freiem Fuß. Zumindest vorübergehend. Während der verurteilte Mörder nach Jahren seinen ersten Freigang erhält, wird Dr. Cornelius Stahl beauftragt, ein gerichtliches Gutachten zu diesem Mann zu erstellen. Denn: Erich Willner hat seinerzeit Rache geschworen und angekündigt, die beiden Männer umzubringen, die er für den Tod seiner Frau verantwortlich macht. Von diesen beiden ist nur noch einer übrig: Olaf Böhme. Während des Freigangs passiert das scheinbar Unmögliche: Böhme wird erschossen in seinem Haus aufgefunden. Haupttatverdächtiger ist Willner, der jedoch seine Unschuld beteuert. Dr. Stahl bereut zutiefst, dass er von Willner getrennt wurde, als der Mord geschah. Er schaltet sich auf eigene Faust in die Ermittlungen ein und muss sich vor allem folgende Frage stellen: Wurde er von Willner reingelegt oder gibt es noch weitere Verdächtige, die ein Interesse an Böhmes Tod hatten?
