About this listen

Venice stands, as she loves to tell you, on the frontiers of the east and west, half-way between the setting and the rising sun. Goethe calls her "the market-place of the Morning and the Evening lands". Certainly no city on earth gives a more immediate impression of symmetry and unity, or seems more patently born to greatness.

Deeply informative whilst entertaining, especially the last chapter, it was such a great way to end this book. Hopefully you’re somewhat familiar with Venice so that when places are referred to, they evoke familiar sights. This book doesn’t lapse into a dry history of Venice either - the book views history through the present in order to give said history living context. The anecdotes are very enjoyable as well, as are the vignettes of the Venetian people, past and present. Venetian customs are given an outsider’s sympathetic treatment, with the occasional quizzical, humorous slant. I feel like I’ve just returned from a holiday in Venice! 5 stars.

It feels like I’m there without physical being there, narrative is very vivid and detailed.

Lovely and lively

Excellent insight. Engaging. The detail of Venice is a good base, but the lagoon and island histories/stories got me. I'll listen to this again.

great stuff
