Eines Morgens im August 1992, einen Tag vor meinem sechsundsiebzigsten Geburtstag, läutete das Telefon. Ich hielt mich gerade im Garten meines Hauses auf. Ich hatte die ganze Nacht schlecht geschlafen, es war schwül gewesen und die Gelsen hatten mich gequält, weshalb ich bereits kurz vor der Morgendämmerung aufgestanden war. Ich war eigenartig nervös gewesen und hatte beschlossen, noch vor der Tageshitze meinen Garten zu pflegen. Als ich es nun klingeln hörte, lief ich sofort ins Haus und hob ab.
