Publisher's Summary

The course of true love never did run smoothly - not when it involves a duel at dawn, a fight with a monkey, and mysterious goings-on at a séance.

An unexpected encounter.

Lucius Valentine has vowed to marry. Being an only son, duty and obligation weigh heavily on his shoulders. But how does a man choose a bride when his heart is devoid of emotion?

Deciding on the widow, Lady Durrant, he soon realises he is not the only gentleman vying for her attention. The conflict ends in a dawn appointment where a surprise encounter sends Valentine’s marriage plans awry and throws his ordered life into turmoil.

Even strong women crave love.

Miss Ava Kendall has a hell of a game trying to keep her wayward brother out of trouble. In rescuing him from his recent escapade, she is thrown into the path of the enigmatic Lord Valentine. The man is charming, intelligent, beyond handsome, and clearly unused to dealing with a woman possessed of a sharp tongue and original mind. Gentlemen of his ilk usually avoid the bluestocking types. So why does he stare at her with hungry eyes? Why does their verbal sparring awaken a passion more profound than anything Ava has experienced before?

A wild adventure leads to a passionate affair.

After the theft of his mother’s prized blood ruby, Valentine is tasked with finding the culprit. And who should be on the list of suspects? The outspoken Miss Kendall. All evidence points to her guilt. But there is more to the mystery than meets the eye and the couple find themselves embroiled in plots of murder and blackmail. While their attraction deepens amidst the chaos, a villain is busy working behind the scenes to ruin their happy ever after.

Narrator ruins it

This story and the series is a pleasant diversion, with the characters and stories that are entertaining. This installment's heroine, however, is a bit annoying. She's so pushy and has a chip on her shoulder that makes her constant attempts to one-up the hero distracting and unattractive. The biggest issue with the series, though, is the narrator. Her forceful and constant emphases within the sentences and overly enunciated language verges on the melodramatic. I managed to get through this story but I'm not sure I can take another novel with the same narrator.

least favorite in the series

I think valentine's story was weak and it was prolonged. There was a point where they had the villan right there and just let him go because the heroine was scared for no reason whatsoever. Out of all the heroine and heroes in this series Valentine and Ava were the least likeable.

Love a good mystery!

I absolutely love this book! The mystery is well thought out with just enough twists and turns to keep the reader interested. It's fast-paced and has some surprising revelations. The moment you think you got it all figured out you are thrown for a loop. I love this kind of mystery. I also love all the characters; old and new. If you like a love story with a good mystery, this one is for you! And, as always, Liisa has done a great job narrating.

Mystery, romance, friendship

Another intriguing story from Adele Clee. I’ve enjoyed all the stories in this series and yet again I couldn’t wait for the next time to listen to it. The characters of Lucius and Aveline were very engaging. Aveline was a member of the enlightened ladies’ group, as was Lucius’ mother. Lucius is a handsome man and nothing seems to phase him but Ava intrigues him. I loved their growing relationship. I also enjoyed the bond of friendship between the men. There are number of surprises that are gradually revealed and will keep you listening until the end. There was a little teaser for the next story about the last of the friends and I’m looking forward to that story. I thought the narrator read it well. She used different voices to bring the scenes to life.

Melodramatic and totally Unbelievable.

I think the author has run out of ideas, so put this "mish mash" together. I read the first two books and enjoyed them, but will not bother with rest, on this experience. It is filled with alot of gratuitous sex, physically and mentally. In fact there is alot of mental cogitation, " should I shouldn't I" " will I won't I" and so on. The heroine is portrayed as a sensible, efficient woman and turns out to be an idiot. I am not sure; whether she has been waiting for a tall dark haired, blue eye, honourable man, to come along. Enabling her throw herself into the most ridiculous situations, so that she can be save, or she is just plain dumb. As for the hero, it is any-bodies guess, so his father was mental disturbed, he left home to escape his memories, but found they came with him. he loves his mother will do anything for her as he knows what she has suffered, yet he leaves her for years. Then there is the brother, not worth the effort of comment. The narrator has a wispy voice, so adds to the drama, I don't know whether it is naturally or she felt the book needed it.
