Im 16. Jahrhundert träumte der englische Humanist Thomas Morus von einer besseren Welt. In seinem Hauptwerk Utopia, das 1516 auf Latein erschien, beschreibt er einen fiktiven Inselstaat mit einer Gesellschaft der Gleichen, in der es weder Geld noch Privateigentum gibt. Nicht das Individuum zählt dort, sondern das Kollektiv. So berichtet zumindest der angeblich weit gereiste Begleiter Amerigo Vespuccis, der die paradiesische Insel mit eigenen Augen gesehen haben will. Mit eindringlicher Stimme macht Ulrich Matthes dieses "Utopia" lebendig, das namensgebend für ein ganzes literarisches Genre wurde.
