Publisher's Summary

A dark enchantment blights the land.

Agnieszka loves her village, set deep in a peaceful valley. But the nearby enchanted forest casts a shadow over her home. Many have been lost to the Wood, and none returns unchanged. The villagers depend on an ageless wizard, the Dragon, to protect them from the forest's dark magic. However, his help comes at a terrible price. One young village woman must serve him for 10 years, leaving all she values behind.

Agnieszka fears her dearest friend, Kasia, will be picked at the next choosing, for she's everything Agnieszka is not - beautiful, graceful and brave. Yet when the Dragon comes, it's not Kasia he takes.

Well written folklore fantasy

Folklore fantasy full of malevolent woods and powerful magic. Interesting twists in the plot and characters who develop and grow. Very enjoyable. Solid narration.

Deeply engaging stand-alone fantasy

Lovely story, with a fascinating and very sinister baddie in the form of an entire evil forest! Feels like a Russian fairytale (as it is meant to) and the pace is brisk and exciting. A real pleasure.

Brilliant new fairytale for grown-up tastes.

I was absolutely captivated by this story. Katy Sobey is a wonderful narrator, her range as far as character voices is remarkable (I am so thrilled that she's also voicing Naomi Novik's new book, Spinning Silver!). Naomi Novik has written her own version of the Beauty and the Beast story/Grimm fairytale - complete with the dark and sometimes gruesome happenings, twists and surprises of those classic fables that keep you on the edge of your seat. I can't praise this book enough. Loved it.

A good twist on fantasy tropes

It's refreshing to find a heroine in a fantasy story that is actually afraid of magic and has all the limited worldly knowledge of her peasant upbringing. The forest was a horrific looming, presence over the whole novel, and a wonderful antagonistic force that that protagonists struggle to contend with. With interesting and well developed side characters, this was a great read.

Classic wizards and forests.

Classic wizard's apprentice story with a few nice twists and laughs. The first third is amazing. Goes through several climaxes, feeling a bit like a trilogy in one book.

And of all the books you just happened to pick up...

A beautiful fairytale

Really enjoyed every second of this, and the narrator was wonderful. A fairytale for adults, I loved the magic of it.

Not one to miss if you love fantasy

Regretful that I bought this book as my first on here as now I'm not sure it can be topped. Gripping story with great character development, plenty of plot twists and moves at a fast pace keeping you hooked. I struggled to concentrateat work, thinking about it and wondering what will happen next. I have to agree with some comments on different sites, in which the story line could have easily been made into a book series as well. Overall a book suited for grown up tastes and Katy Sobey's performance was brilliant. However, if you dont like Tsundere men this isn't the book for you.

A wonderful fairy tale

I was pleasantly surprised by this story and the great twist on a classic style story. I found the story action packed with a fast pace which kept me listening for hours at a time. I've recommended this book to a few people who have all loved it.

Captivating and ready for the next one

The narrator was excellent. She changed her tone well for different characters which I enjoyed.
The story was easy to keep up with but could have gone into a lot more depth. I'm hoping that happens with the next books.
Thanks for your imagination!

High fantasy knock out

I think this is the quickest I've ever finished an audiobook! Novik does wonderfully to create a world of magic and fantasy, told through the perspective of a quirky but admirable heroine. While it can be considered a coming of age, this is also a novel with strong environmental themes. The presence of alternative magic, and its conflict with traditional magic can act as a metaphor for the power of the road not taken.

Sobey's narration does seem robotic at first. But her crisp diction soon works in her favour and she creates the voice of the main character beautifully. Fantastic pronunciation of what I assume to be Polish names, and great voices of different characters.

confused about the hugely varied reviews? read thi

Ok so the first 5 chapters she is a bit whiney and whinge repetitively about her predicament. he's a miserable negative pratt but do stick with it. the book totally redeems itself soon after and it's a great book. The narrator is perfect for the character, at once whimsical and aloof and real too so you feel you know agnieshka. I'm sure I spelt that wrong, ah well. The wood is fascinating and the magic gets better and better. a highly engaging book.

Thanks for the narrator!

I’m very grateful to those who decided to find a new narrator for this book. In my opinion it’s the key to everything when it comes to listening a book. So it was my first reason to buy an audio instead of a printed book. I was very unhappy when I could not listen to the previous narrator because of the accent. Katy Sobey did a great job and it really feels like magic especially when you can let yourself to close your eyes and just go with the flow.
The book itself is a little bit slow paced and even if something happens it feels like we are still stuck in one place and no one is going anywhere. However it is a beautiful story and I have no complaints.

A beautiful telling

This is a gem of a story, gracefully presented and told with the language to match. Some stories are a pleasure to listen to purely because they are beautifully written, but this has all three; Great story, well written, and perfectly narrated.
Highly recommend!

Haunting and poetic

I truly loved this audio book. The narration was perfect in pitch, pace and emotional interpretation. The tale engrossing. I was riveted to my iPod until the end. A perfect fantasy for mature young adults and older.
The blurb is a little misleading, but it drew me in as I love dragons. I forgave the absence of a fire breathing dragon as the story unfolds steadily and inexorably in the fight of good against evil. The world building is detailed and the magic so believable.
This is an amazing stand alone adult fantasy with genuine characters. It is a testament to love, friendship, loyalty, sacrifice and redemption. Such a complex plot. No spoilers. Just be assured that if you enjoy fantasy, this is a must listen.

(the review was too short, or as I like to call it "concise", so throwing some more words here, they are not important tho': pink elefants wearing batlle armor in a kiddie pool fighting an army of angry bees.)

BEST BOOK ON AUDIBLE SO FAR

If you could sum up Uprooted in three words, what would they be?

Amazing, Magical and Earthly

Any additional comments?

Usually don't read these types of books; I have a hard time suspending disbelief when books deal with magic also these types of books tend to use a lot of flowery language to seem more 'magical' - thank God 'Uprooted' doesn't fall into those traps. Once I started listening I could not stop. A lot of it down to the perfect narration of Katy Sobey but also to the simple, straightforward telling of the story, which reminded me of JK Rowling. The characters are also pretty likeable especially the MC and I liked the strong female friendship between the MC and her best friend. The story flows so naturally all the way to the end, which was so satisfying. So 5 stars from me.

Original and wonderful.

A tale of magic, love and loss, turning to greed, fear and hate From start to finish, this enchanting tale gripped me.

The writing is wonderfully descriptive, taking you on a journey to another realm. The central characters are painted so vividly that you’d recognise them if you saw them in the street.

17 of the most enjoyable hours of listening I have ever had.

Exceptional epic fantasy

Despite listening to over 300 books a year, I've only found two new fantasy authors I'd really recommend in 2016. This is a beautifully narrated story with hints of probably Russian folk tales, though I don't know where or how varied the author's influences. It feels like the literary equivalent or a monsoon in the desert.

Fabulous fantasy

Katy Sobey was a marvellous narrator for this very fine fantasy tale. I will very much look forward to further works by this author. The pace was excellent, the characters engaging and the story was unique and familiar in an enjoyable way.

Surprised

This is not my usual type of book and so I was surprised to find how much I enjoyed it. It is beautifully written and narrated. I found that if it had stopped in 3 different places, it would have been ‘enough book’ but it just kept on going. Loved it!!

It was refreshing to listen to. I thought it was aimed for young girls around 15-20 but I appreciated it more as I read and i would recommend it to most people.

Awful

I'd recommend this book to anyone who for reasons beyond my comprehension likes Twilight saga. Same story of hardly of age girl suddenly finding herself very special and in love with some mysterious hundred year old man. Which I personally find far from fascinating, but dull and degrading. I've also discovered what seems the only disadvantage of an audio book - you can suddenly find yourself listening to a "his firm thigh between my legs" passage without being able to flick through the pages to escape it.
I deeply regret buying this book and my own habit of not being able to put down a story I've started to read or listen.
