Story
Just when Glennon Doyle Melton was beginning to feel she had it all figured out - three happy children, a doting spouse and a writing career so successful that her first book catapulted to the top of the New York Times best-seller list - her husband revealed his infidelity and she was forced to realise that nothing was as it seemed. A recovering alcoholic and bulimic, Glennon found that rock bottom was a familiar place. In the midst of crisis, she knew to hold on to what she discovered in recovery: that her deepest pain has always held within it an invitation to a richer life.

This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose and my strength, but also to finding my voice in a world that didn't always see me. As I wrote Finding Me, my eyes were open to the truth of how our stories are often not given close examination. They are bogarted, reinvented to fit into a crazy, competitive, judgmental world. So I wrote this for anyone who is searching for a way to understand and overcome a complicated past, let go of shame and find acceptance.

Hugh van Cuylenburg was a primary school teacher volunteering in northern India when he had a life-changing realisation: despite the underprivileged community the children were from, they were remarkably positive. By contrast, back in Australia Hugh knew that all too many children struggled with depression, social anxieties and mental illness. His own little sister had been ravaged by anorexia nervosa. How was it that young people he knew at home, who had food, shelter, friends and a loving family, struggled with their mental health, while these kids seemed so contented and resilient?

I don't like self-help books
- By Jo on 06-12-2019
Editorial Reviews
Glennon Doyle’s celebrated best-selling self-help memoir, Untamed, offers uplifting lessons in telling the truth about yourself and daring to be brave.
From breaking free of a stifling marriage to finding the courage to set boundaries, Untamed chronicles Glennon Doyle’s personal journey of awakening and overcoming obstacles by no longer letting others determine how she lives her life. Presented in 65 short chapters with titles such as Dragons, Gardens, and Blood Baths, the author’s parable-like stories are nourishing nuggets for your ears. If her words weren’t honest enough, Doyle’s powerful reading of Untamed takes you along as she navigates her challenges and urges every woman to find her true self.
Grammy winning artist Adele declared to her millions of Instagram followers that 'this book will shake your brain and make your soul scream'—and rightly so. A New York Times best seller, Untamed was one of the most downloaded audiobooks in 2020 and named one of the best books of the year by O, The Oprah Magazine. It is currently being developed for television.
Untamed is a lesson in allowing ourselves to simply be and not fit into a box striving to meet others’ expectations. Through Doyle’s uproarious delivery, this audiobook encourages rejection of the status quo with a jolt of honesty that must be heard.
Publisher's Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
Who were you before the world told you who to be?
Part inspiration, part memoir, Untamed explores the joy and peace we discover when we stop striving to meet the expectations of the world and instead dare to listen to and trust in the voice deep inside us. From the beloved New York Times best-selling author, speaker and activist Glennon Doyle.
For many years, Glennon Doyle denied her discontent. Then, while speaking at a conference, she looked at a woman across the room and fell instantly in love. Three words flooded her mind: There. She. Is. At first, Glennon assumed these words came to her from on high but soon she realised they had come to her from within. This was the voice she had buried beneath decades of numbing addictions and social conditioning. Glennon decided to let go of the world’s expectations of her and reclaim her true untamed self.
Soulful and uproarious, forceful and tender, Untamed is both an intimate memoir and a galvanising wake-up call. It is the story of how one woman learned that a responsible mother is not one who slowly dies for her children, but one who shows them how to fully live. It is also the story of how each of us can begin to trust ourselves enough to set boundaries, make peace with our bodies, honour our anger and heartbreak and unleash our truest, wildest instincts.
Untamed shows us how to be brave. And, as Glennon insists, 'The braver we are, the luckier we get.'

Every woman and her daughter should read this
As a woman nearing 40, raised in a religon I never felt completely true, still having body issues and a long history of addiction, I can relate to everything in this book. And yet no one would know unless I told them, which I have started doing to everyones disbelief, because I hid it so well behind judgement, perfectionism and a complete denial of who I am and what made me , me. Now I am stepping into my most beautiful and truest self. I am not happily married, I have never ever wanted to live where I am living, and no I do not want to dress corporate and sit at a desk all day ggrrrrrr
Only read this book if you are ready to feel untamed. And absolutely give it to every woman, young and old that you see.

A wealthy white woman's self help book
Glennon touches on some really important and complex themes that I wholly appreciate - gender roles, misogyny, privilege, religion, queer identity. But all of these themes were touched on only very lightly and the difficulties attached to them were quickly addressed with a repetitive and superficial attitude of self affirmation and inner strength.
Sarah Neilson in the Seattlr Times wrote that it "reads like a self help book for wealthy, white women". And I tend to agree.
Still, the stars are in appreciation of her honesty on why the notion of relaxing was annoying to her and her writing on the dichotomy of religion and in being in a same sex relationship (which admittedly I have not read so much about but was happy to have had an introduction through Untamed).

Some absolute pearls of wisdom but some ranty bits
I had cancelled my Audible subscription but heard such awesome reviews of this book I just had to rejoin to listen. I gained some amazing insights from this book and those parts alone make it so worthwhile. However, there are some parts full of ranty, arrogant, holier than though stuff which nearly made me stop listening altogether. In the end I did skip a few half chapters and just stayed with what resonated with me.

Her voice just got on my nerves by the time
I got mid way through, very moany depressing drawl type vibe. it’s not a feel good book at all, it starts out well and she attempts to get the reader fired up and succeeds but then it goes way down hill from there. I’ve tried to go back and finish it but just can’t manage it unfortunately.

What's The Point?
I felt like each chapter in this book told a short thought provoking story, which took a bit to get used to but was interesting enough.
But by about halfway I started feeling like, but what's your point? I found it hard to sink my teeth into.
I thought it would be an inspiring book, but for me, it just didn't quite get there.
It was thought provoking though and well read.

“The door isn’t even locked!”
It’s not that the concept of ‘women being caged by this world’ is new, but this book offers ways of becoming untamed that are. Well, new to me & wonderful.
Besides this, I love Glennon’s writing. Or maybe more precisely her thinking, & she’s great at putting her thoughts into words.
This book was revelatory in parts and yet it felt like I was hearing age-old wisdom I have always known. I was sad for it to finish but now I’m excited to see my wilderness expand♥️

Important points raised,but conveyed in a long-way
Narration is good and the book addresses important and useful points about living authentically and about self-acceptance. Mostly these are conveyed with great clarity, but sometimes it is hard to connecf with the author's abstract and grandiose language. But overall, definitely recommended for someone struggling with self-love, trust and self-compassion. I will revisit segments of it when I can.

Repetitive & Obvious
Listened to this for 3 hours but couldn't finish it. There was so much repetition of the points. The author clearly had a word count she needed to reach. Also, if you're an atheist be warned that she invokes the idea of God's help and guidance a fair bit.
My main gripe is that she frames her advice as if it's a remarkable novel lesson. In fact, it's blindingly obvious and left me thinking, "wait, that's it?" eg. "don't ask Google if you should divorce your cheating husband" and "boys and girls are treated differently from an early age by society and religion"...she also describes the fireworks moment of meeting her wife to-be apparently oblivious to the well-established literature on how lust followed by bonding followed by love works.
This is basically just a memoir about leaving her husband and becoming a lesbian. If you're looking for something self-helpy, inspiring and genuinely informative then this isn't it.

Inspiring & baffling in equal measure
As a white, gay man I’m probably not the target demo for this. However, so much of it resonated and felt empowering..... But then I started questing stuff. Like Glennon’s uncanny ability to say incredibly inspiring stuff on the spot. Her weirdly contradictory views and her shameless self aggrandisement. Of course that’s part and parcel of ‘novelising’ your memoir, but by the end it all felt a bit ham fisted and convenient.

Absolutely amazing. Just what I needed
Honestly found this time during Corona the hardest time of my life with my business exposed, my family separated and my mother in law dying. This book has helped me cope and also helped me to redefine what I want my life to be like after all of this hard stuff. Everyone needs this book in their life! Love love love

Not useful, inspiring or interesting
I am 45 minutes in and this book has inspired me for the first time ever to see if I can return an audiobook and get my money back. Life is full of problems and his book gives you absolutely no pointers on how to view, let alone solve, any of them. It was a tedious and frustrating listen. I do truly wonder about the people who gave this book rave reviews. Somewhere out there are people leading very very very dull lives...

Wow
I was captivated from the very first minute of listening, I’m not a huge fan of paperback books, so i thought I’d try and audiobook. This was my first audiobook, and frankly has allowed me to view books in a whole new light. Overall, i highly recommend this especially if you are struggling with something in your life. Just amazing from start to finish.

I didn't expect the immediate impact listening to this has had on my life... hearing Glennon impart such wisdom in her own voice made it all the more meaningful. Thank you!

This book is everything
This is one woman’s story, but it is a story so truly human that it can be all of our stories if we dare to live by the lessons she has learned. The writing beautiful. I will reread this many many times I’m sure.
