About this listen

Missing children are reappearing, and the ties to a 30-year-old cold case can’t be ignored.

Detective Quaid Valor has too much on his plate. Between his shaky, brand-new relationship with reformed office playboy Detective Aslan Doyle, his sister’s case going from cold to hot overnight, his father insisting on being involved, and his boss breathing down his neck, Quaid is on edge.

The stress of the case is impacting Quaid’s whole life. He isn’t eating or sleeping, and every time he and Aslan are together, he is overwhelmed by feelings of inadequacy which threaten to ruin the one good thing he has. Aslan’s patience seems unending until something happens to turn his life upside down too.

Can their relationship survive the personal and professional pressures they’re facing, or will it crash and burn?

Between media rumors and unstable connections, Quaid and his team need to hustle and piece together a complicated case before more children fall victim to their unknown serial kidnapper. Maybe once everything is solved, Aslan and Quaid will have time to work on their rocky relationship and find stable ground once again.

*Unstable Connections is the third book in the Valor and Doyle Mystery Series. It is a same-couple series that should be read in order. Although each book has a self-contained mystery with no cliffhangers, the romance is over-arching and progressive throughout the series.

Det Quaid Valor was deeply affected by the disappearance of his older sister, Juniper, when she was 10 yo. He joined the Missing Persons Unit to find other missing people and he’s always on the lookout for clues on Juniper’s open cold case. So when a disappeared girl is found wearing Juniper’s weathered backpack, his world is turned upside down. Soon another lost girl reappears with more links to Juniper. Is she still out there or is this some sick game someone is playing? Valor has always been highly strung but his boyfriend, Det Aslan Doyle, will need all his patience as Valor and his ex-cop father go into overdrive trying to solve the string of cases—unstable is right!

Another riveting Valor & Doyle case, I really enjoyed the wild ride! I found it quite emotional and unsettling thinking of the missing children and their distraught families, let alone the impact it was having on Valor. I guess I expected Valor & Doyle to settle quickly into cosy-couple mode after the first couple of books. But Valor’s residual trust issues, the sneering façade he uses to mask the hurt and self-esteem issues, and his inability to pace himself when he gets involved in a case all cause angst and threaten to rip the fledgling relationship apart. I still really appreciate the balance between the mystery and the relationship in each book, neither plot line plays second fiddle to the other and that gives them both a lot of substance. Great stuff! 🎧 US voice actor Nick J Russo gives another strong performance, though I’m guessing Canadian listeners would prefer a more Canadian accent since the series is set in Toronto!

Absolutely gripping and absorbing!

The cases. The policing. The romantic interludes and connection. Juniper’s case sits front and centre and Aslan has some professional issues that sees him helping Quaid in the Missing Person’s Unit this time.
This was such a good book with emotion and the wrapping up of something 30 years and 25 days overdue. On to book #4.

Getting Better and Better.

This series just keeps getting better. This is the best storyline of the three books thus far. It has heaps of twists and turns and huge problems for both our protagonists to overcome. I can’t wait for the next book. It going to be very hard for it to top this however.

Keeps getting better.
