About this listen

The ring has been bought, and all Aslan has to do is create the perfect setup for a proposal. No problem. Nothing to it. Quaid deserves the best, and he plans to deliver.

After choreographing a romantic evening to officially pop the question, Aslan is ready.

But things don’t go as planned, and the evening is ruined. Quaid’s insecurities rear their ugly head, making him suspicious. He knows Aslan is hiding something, but pessimism insists it isn’t a good thing.

When Aslan gets called out of town to hunt down a long-acting serial killer, there is no time to soothe his over-anxious boyfriend’s worries or make a new attempt to propose.

Torn between a complicated case and figuring out the perfect way to ask Quaid to marry him, Aslan is left scrambling. Every idea falls flat. Every scrambling attempt fails. The more pressure he puts on himself, the more unsuccessful his efforts, and Quaid’s fears grow.

Aslan needs to solve this serial killer case and get home to straighten the mess he’s made.

Disrupted Engagement is the sixth book in the Valor and Doyle mystery series. It is a same-couple series that should be listened to in order. Although each book has a self-contained mystery with no cliffhangers, the romance is overarching.

I've listened to the 6 books in the series so far and love them all. The characters, their banter, the mystery, and suspense make it hard to stop listening. Loved the romance and felt for Valour and Doyle as they negotiated the next stage of their relationship. I'm very excited for the next book. As always, the narration was superb. Highly recommend this series.

Still loving the series

Homicide Det Aslan Doyle wants to ask his boyfriend, Det Quaid Valor, to marry him but he gets nervous each time he tries to pop the question. Quaid is not the calmest, most trusting person. He knows Aslan is acting mysteriously and he’s getting increasingly worried that Aslan wants to end the relationship. Things get worse when Aslan and his partner, Torin, are seconded to the provincial town of Cornwall to investigate a serial killer’s burial site. As the days stretch out on their enforced separation, Quaid is getting increasingly paranoid about Aslan’s secret. It’s a tricky assignment with multiple unidentified victims and the local police force aren’t being very helpful, resenting the fact that a conflict of interest requires detectives from Toronto to conduct the case.

I found the tone of this uneven: the seriousness of the serial killer case was pitted against the increasingly farcical proposal attempts. I was totally engaged by the investigation, especially when different local police officers were implicated. However, while the hotel scene was funny, I found it hard to believe even someone as highly strung as Quaid would act in such a crazy way—it crossed the line from character into caricature. Anyway, I still enjoyed the book immensely. 🎧 US voice artist Nick J Russo gives another strong performance, I especially liked his characterisation of the crotchety old man!

Lots of disruption during a serial killer case!
