From social media star and change-maker Molly Burke, a vulnerable, honest, and darkly humorous memoir on navigating the challenges of being a blind woman in a sighted world
When Molly Burke was four years old, she was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a rare degenerative eye disease that leads to eventual blindness, forcing her to see the world through new eyes—literally. Growing up disabled didn’t stop her from playing sports, becoming a rock-climbing instructor, or winning a beauty pageant, but other people’s narrow perceptions of her held her back.
Years of relentless bullying, toxic work environments, a rodent-infested apartment, and life’s lowest moments were juxtaposed with red carpets, first-class flights, and personal and professional achievements. Throughout her life, Molly has learned to appreciate the duality, and, most importantly, she’s learned the beauty of being unapologetically yourself and standing up for what you truly believe in.
In Unseen, Molly chronicles her journey as a disabled woman, entrepreneur, and entertainer, illuminating what her experiences have taught her and what she hopes others can learn from her hardship and successes. Part memoir, part rallying cry for a more compassionate and empathetic world, Unseen recounts Molly’s life and experiences fighting against the expectations society set for her and, in doing so, helps listeners find their own voice, inner strength, and self-acceptance.

I’ve been a follower for a long time. I don’t think I even found you through a collab I think I just found you scrolling through YouTube, and for once I saw someone that was like my dad we weren’t alone. But one of the biggest things you brought me is being young. I know what do you mean being young? Well when your father is sooo much older then you talking about how assessable a mobile phone is now and him screaming at Siri is not a great afternoon, but you being young using TikTok and YouTube and loving it brought idk what kind of feeling but maybe relief? Talking to my dad about YouTube was like when you tried to explain what making YouTube videos to your parents was like. My dad I will always look up to in the same way anyone looks up to there dad but you being able to fulfil that side of YouTube is crazy ! The chat I’ve always wanted with my dad I could easily have it with you 🤣 your book was heartbreaking but understandable in why you were so easily targeted and I just wasted to stand up for you the same way I do for my dad. I know para social relationships is shun on but can’t help it besides me being a tom boy we have a lot in common when it comes to morals and for that I will always support you. I dont care that your blind I care that your an amazing girl that being through a lot but kept fighting. I care that you care about other cultures and people and animals. I care about the dark humour and that you love colour still and need to match ❤️ blindness isn’t who you are Molly is and I want you to know you are seen by me Molly that your blindness is a extension of you yes and we shouldn’t forget that and that personally I will always tell you that your handle is at 3 o clock if I served you coffee but that the other stuff like chating ranting hanging girly girly is more you then anything and that I see that. I’m a disabled woman with an acquired injury, sometimes I feel like I don’t belong to the disabled community (because I’m physically disabled not mentally) or the able bodied one. Hearing Mollys struggles helps put my own into perspective. Thanks Molly for being so honest about your journey. It’s nice hearing it in a way that doesn’t conform to the YouTube algorithmic click bait extremes.
I’m inspired to speak up more, thanks Molly xxx
